after 7 1/2 years i have quit my job. I have been a draftsman/coordinator for a union mechanical contractor here in baltimore.i am originally a union journeyman plumber. today is my last day and i feel really good about my decision. i am going to a rival company, doing the same type of work. but in a better environment. a month ago i sat down with my supervisors and told them i was unhappy here. and stated to them my list of reasons.
1.in house (department) bickering.
2.poor IT response
3.inadequate computers to work on
4.lack of communication between foreman and coordinators
5.taking an individual that is good at what they do and just pounding on them all day long.
6.lack of training for current and new employees.
7.lack of communication between coworkers on the same project.
8.false hope and promises from upper management.
9.company taking on new work, then outsourcing the drawing aspect.
10.vice presidents constantly belittling the department.
11. getting up in the morning everyday only to dread going to work.
the list goes on.
i am going to be going on vacation next week and starting with the new company on the 28th. my new managers actually used to work here 4 years ago. they told me when they left if i needed a job or a change of scenery to give them a call. i was upfront and honest with them and i think they appreciated that. i have already put in for my specific vacation times with them and they agreed to all of the time off.
after 7 1/2 years i am a new man again.

getting up in the morning everyday only to dread going to work.

That in itself is enough to look for other employment. Glad you've found something else and I hope that the change brings a brighter future for you. Enjoy your week off and good luck on the new job.

Good luck Stevedplumber. Sounds like this change is made for valid reasons and over due. Enjoy your week off and then go it is strong in the new gig after that.

That's great. It's too easy to get stuck in a rut when you have security. You definitley did the right thing!

and almost a $1.00 more an hour was a plus as well. but i did not mention that to my supervisors at my present company. i wanted them to know i was real unhappy and it was not about money. i made it clear a couple of years ago if i came them to have "the talk" it would not be to get more money, since i am already near the top of the pay scale, it would be to say i am moving on.

Been there, done that. It takes guts and the courage of your convictions to make a stand
and walk away from a job with the financial security and benefits that go with it.

Having said that, there is also a time to "Nut up, or shut up!" when you are no longer
happy with your job. It is absolutely vital to your health and well being to be happy
with your work. It does not matter how much money you are making if you are miserable.

I've found to be somewhat content with anything related to the construction industry you must work for yourself, although it doesn't isolate one completely from the plethora of a-holes in the industry.

Congratulations Steve! I'm at this job 2 years now.I was in the same situation with all of your problems listed.I told them NOT to entice me to stay,i'd had enough of IT after 20 years.

Some things still remain the same though. They push for ever increasing profit margins....WITHOUT properly compensating after the fact. But,change is Gooooood

I no longer take it personal.A job is merely a means to an end.I can work anywhere.

Work pays the bills, I have done that. I have made double and triple what I am making now, but I was absolutely miserable. The second this quits being fun, I will go back to the corporate grind, and work the system for all it is worth and retire down in Mexico... I hear there are some nice roads down there. And alot of dirt.

You'll love it!

I took a year off several years ago . . and a funny thing happened. . . all of a sudden I was in demand and fresh. . .stumbled into the coolest of the cool.

My wife was not getting some things she expected in her job . . . and after LOTS of bugging (harrassement perhaps) from me . . walked.

She's taking the summer off and a funny thing happened. . . .we got back from Homecoming and she's been inundated with offers that are light years beyond what she'd dreamed of.

The best way to get where you SHOULD be is to get the hell out of where you should not. Many folks are miserable at work, lacking the confidence to follow their hearts and dreams.

All the best to you !

Since a large portion of your life is spent at work, dreading going there does not make for a very happy life. Good on ya for finding something you can look forward to.

I may be broke, but I refuse to let a job make me miserable!

So, I work for myself and embracing the suck doesn't suck as bad -- if that makes any sense at all.

Congratulations and good luck!

good to see you have the right attitude for it steve but if you ever think about coming over to the darkside of drafting, this is the time to do it. unless you go direct, you won't have very many benefits, but the money talks. don't know what your situation is as far as family but right now with the kids grown up, the wife and i are enjoying moving around a little. i'll be going back to chattanooga to work after the first of the month because the company i was with lost some work but the other one picked more up. i could have gone to work quicker if i wanted to go further west, but i'm gonna hold off on that for a while. plus the nice thing about going back to chattanooga is i'll be going back to 3'd work. good luck.

Congrats and good luck in your new position. I have worked with too many people who had only negative things to say about their jobs, but refused to quit. You, on the other hand, made an informed decision to do what is best for you. I applaud you for that.

I am not that thrilled with my job right now, but it pays pretty good and I have way to much invested into the retirement to walk away from it. I am five years from qualifying for retirement from this job at 50, so my plan is to stay till 50 and then find something else. If I walk now I lose LOTS of money. But, since I am staying I have wised up and I refuse to get drawn into the complaining that so many of my coworkers do. It only serves to make me less happy, not more.

I don't know your situation so I won't criticize it specifically but I did cringe a little when I read this:

2.poor IT response
3.inadequate computers to work on

I work in IT and I see this complaint often. People say, "It takes me 30 minutes to do a 5 minute job and nobody does anything to fix it! When am I going to get a faster computer?" Then I try to accomplish the job in question on their computer and it only takes me 3 minutes. You know the old saying: It's a bad musician who blames their instrument.

Seriously though, if you were dreading going to work every morning it was time to get out. I still like going to work even with all the "bad musicians".

Congrats on the new job and having the stones to make it happen.

I've had a couple jobs I didn't like but I didn't have them for long! In the past, whenever I got the "dread going to work" feeling I knew it was time to go. It has been a loooong time since that has happened. The last time was about 11 years ago when I quit the car biz after 9.5 years. It had gotten to be a drag and I had a manager that would not understand my requirement of "leave me alone and let me do what I do".
I only work in jobs that "fit" me. I only work for people that allow me the freedom to "Be Dave".

Change is good.
