I know this should be in the knowledge vault but I really need too get the old girl up and running as it's my primary mode of transportation. I dug all over the knowledge vault as too avoid this post but I really couldnt find what I was looking for.

Yesterday I was coming off the interstate and for what ever reason I could not shift into first gear. I was able too get it back in second and get it too a safe spot too pull over. So after waiting about 15 mins or so, I was able too get it into first and get back home. I dug thru my manual thinking its a clutch problem and I adjusted my clutch and cable and made sure the fluid was at the correct level per the manual.

Now the bikes shifts "ok" but it just seems that the throw from first too second is alot longer than what it was before. I can get the bike into neutral but now I am unable too get the neutral light too come on unless I hold the shifter in a certain position. I looked in the manual and all I could find on the switch was how too install and remove it. Since the light still comes on I would think that the switch is still ok but something else is out of line. Im still a big newby when it comes too working on my bike but I really do enjoy being able too do so and too avoid a long trip too the dealership. So any help you can provide or what I might need too order too fix this I really do appreciate.
Thanks...
Ron Once upon a time....

Could be something as simple as your primary chain needing adjustment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dealership #1 assessed that the retaining clip holding on the detent plate broke off causing the detent plate to malfunction, therefore I was unable to shift. They fixed the problem and i was on my way. Ten weeks later I was participating in a charity ride through dealership #2 and the darn thing was having trouble shifting again. I tried to limp it back to dealership #2, but the shifter broke off and my left foot hit the pavement. Dealership #2 assessed the problem passed the retaining clip holding the detent plate on to the shift drum assembly. Apparently the metal rods that are in the drum assembly pushed their way out applying pressure to the detent plate which in turn applied undue pressure on the retaining clip and snapo the clip broke again. Now I feel this is what caused the problem in the first place, but what do I know I am just a plumber.

Ron,
This is my story with a shifting problem. Hopi this can be of some help.

My thoughts is the Detent Plate. Check the detent plate, the spring and those two little rods.

On my way back from the 20th I stopped into a retailer in Ontario and spoke to a guy who races in the Canadian Thunder series (Buells took first place this year) suggested I switch to the new upgraded plate as it helps the shifting. He had the part in stock and I took it back with me.

I am going to change it this winter when I change the primary chain adjuster and give it a general good service.

Almost 40,000km on the S1 now and this winter it will undergo a major service job. This is a lot of kilometers seeing my riding season is only 5-6mths with 90% put on in 3 mths.

Sure sounds like something related to the detent plate to me. The pins on the shift drum are pressed into place, and others have seen them get askew. This (if I am remembering the internals correctly ) would make the detent plate sit there at a funny angle. Not sure if anyone has had any luck getting them to stay put once this has happened, or if they replace the shift drum (probably an expensive part). If you have to go that route, get the Baker smooth shift kit.

The only other scenario I could think of would be a badly broken primary tensioner, where a piece of it worked its way all the way to the other end of the transmission, got jammed in there, and bent the little post that triggers the neutral indicator. Thats a pretty long shot though, I don't even remember if the trapdoor has any big openings that might let it through.

If it were a japanese bike I would think it was a bent shift fork, but after having my tranny apart and seeing the shift forks in there, it is hard to imagine bending them.

It's pretty easy to get all the way in there and even have the tranny out on a bench. If you have the necessary two "real big" sockets, you could go from running bike to transmission on the bench in well under an hour. It will go back together much easier with the metal style primary gaskets (cometic or new harley).

Sounds good...I went out and ordered all the parts and some others that I might as well replace while I have the primary off. Im taking off the primary tonight too do some exploring and hopefully the new detent plate should be in within the week. I also purchased a new primary tensioner b/c the parts were so cheap. Only frustrating thing is if I have too take it in it will be a while before I get the back back, b/c it seems there are very few Buell mechanics at any of the dealerships.

I went incognito today too pick up and order the parts on my Dad's bagger. It was weird all the Harley guys who flip me off were waving and all the sport bike guys looked at me like I was crazy for waving at em. I got too the dealership and there were a few old guys on baggers who had that "wtf" look on there face when the saw some punk kid jumping off a electra. I must say I would rather push my Buell then drive that thing again

p.s. What size are those sockets? The biggest one I have is a 36mm that I use too take off my rear tire.

PS you may want to check and make sure that your, shifter arm inside the primary is allighned propery (check your manule for dat) Also you may want to check your neutral idicator sensor. Dont know why mine did it, it may have been the new shifter drum but it was so far in that it wouldn't allow me to get out of first without some force. I shimmed it an BAM all set.

Somebody recently posted the sizes here... I forget what they are, but I think they are all under 36mm easy.

The nuts are technically SAE, but when they get that big, there is always a metric one that fits fine.

I had a problem with the neutral light on my 1998 S1W. I had to remove the primary drive cover on the right to get at the neutral light switch contact. I removed the contact, just push on pull off. Cleaned it crimped it slightly for a tight fit and put it back. Tho it sounds like your problem is much more serious.

I think you hit the Detent plate problem right on the head. When I pulled off the primary quess what chewed up lil piece of metal came falling out? That stupid lil 15 cent clip. After spending all day yesterday trying too find a place that sold the correct size sockets, I took every thing off. Now Im just waiting for my parts too come in.

Be sure to check the shift drum assembly. That was the culprit that caused my lil 15 cent clip to break off, therefore causing that little chewed up lil piece of metal to spoil my day of riding.

I Hope they gave me the new one as I just picked it up this Morning. It has the same number on it as the old one. I asked if there was a newer part, but the guy said there wasnt one. Knowing my luck I got the old one again, The guy who ordered the part for me didnt even know what a detent plate was and I had too point too the picture for him too figure out what it was. I was wondering about this all day today. LOL..while I was at work I had too place a Tec call too fix my machine and I sent a message saying my detent plate broke when it was my detection plate that broke on the machine. The tec came over and had too call a few other tecs too figure out what a detent plate was before I realized my error. Also whats the reason behind gaskets costing so much? My finely crafted detent plate was way cheaper than my primary gasket was.

My 2000 cyclone already had the updated detent plate, so I suspect your 2000 X1 did as well.
