Stop putting the bike in gear: )

On my M2 it was a simple plug in, maybe pull the belt cover, pull that apart, clean, and add some dielectric...

You sure that's not your turn signal indicator?

Perhaps the little switch has rattled loose?
I would suggest turning on the ignition with the tranny in neutral and poking around the top of the tranny case on the right side to see if you can get it to flicker.

Mine did it in traffic in Nashville... scary shit considering I was doing 80 mph.

It does it ocassionally in 1st and 2nd gear. I would check your primary chain tension and go from there

I remember being told to never trust the light... and also.... never leave your siestand down.

After that(the wiring of course) I would do a very simple test:
While in neutral, bike running, lean the bike over as far to the right as possible, while watching the light.
Then lean the bike as far over to the left, while watching the light. If the light changes while you are leaning it over, I would suspect the shift drum retaining bolt has come loose and is allowing the shift drum to move from side to side, especially if your shifting and finding neutral becomes difficult.
