I just flew back in from Big Sur, this AM. (My grandfather, at 93, died at home overlooking the Pacific...what a way to go)

The fires are really crazy...we had cooler, moister air this weekend, but it's going to be hot again, today.
You can't get past Palo Colorado Cyn. Rd. (1000 yards down from Rocky Point Inn) without approved firefighter creds.
Gotta give the firefighters there their props...unreal area covered by this conflagration.
I had hoped to catch up w/a Santa Cruz badwebber, but things were hectic at the family ranch at Big Sur....
barely had time to grab a last-minute slice of Key Lime pie at the Half Moon Bay Coffee Co. en route to SFO.

I may be re-relocating out there, though, in which case I'll be easily found on rt. 84, Skyline, rt. 9, Scotts Valley, Loma Vista ,, Duarte's in Pescadero, etc....
...and down at Laguna

Beautiful area. It's a shame that it's touched by wildfires. I was in Yellowstone last month and couldn't believe how recent the fire damage looked. That fire occurred 20 years ago.

That area is going to be blighted for a long while.

Kudos to the Fire Fighters who are putting in so many hours back to back to try to control this thing.

Me too, Reg-
The family scene was a zoo.
I look forward to catching up with you next time I'm there, though.

My gf and I are leaving next tuesday from WA bound for Laguna Seca via hwy 101 and hwy 1 through northern CA.

That is a beautiful route and I hope there are no issues with fires or road closures.

Rt. 1 is gorgeous throughout- you can always head up into Marin and Sonomoa, there are some nice, long sweeping turns just North of Stinson Beach, North of the old observation emplacements, take it all the way up to Pt. Reyes or, better yet, Bodega Bay (where "The Birds" was filmed)...one of the rare areas of California where you can still eat wild-caught, full size Abalone.

Stop for smoked oysters all along the route, great oyster houses right on 1

GREAT accommodations at the Bodega Bay Lodge and Spa....looks out at Bodega head, smells like wild lavender, exceptional jacuzzis and food (At The Duck Club).

If you go south, head down from SF on Skyline to 84, then head west to San Gregorio, and continue on rt. 1 to the closure at Palo Colorado (about 1 1/2 good riding hours), then head back up and head overt o Madonna above Watsonville, toward rt. 1452 back to 101.

Oh, yeah- from Laguna you can continue on 68 East to 101, there are great little mountain Rd.s all over, down that way...you can even take 101 down to king City (I spent a good deal of my childhood there) and go into Hunter Ligget and over the coastal hills to as close as possible (fires, again) to Lucia

Thanks Tramp, I will print your posts and take them with me.

Skyline is definetly on my list. We will be staying at La Selva near Watsonville in a friend's cabin near the water.

I absolutely love going down there for the races, the riding, the weather, and the scenery. It it the highlight of my year......

Just try, if possible, to hit skyline on a midweek, it's a goddam posedown on weekends...

Tramp, my condolences on the loss of your grandfather. That said, I envy his longevity and the way he passed! We should all be so lucky...

I was lucky enough to live in Portola Valley for about a year back in the '80's (grad school @ Stanford). I'd love to go back and ride those roads again!

Thanks, RT-
Hey- Portola Valley! Cool spot, I was living on University Ave. in Palo Alto in the mid-90s, while Chelsea frolicked among the Cardinals.

My "First Buell": '91 FXR, University Ave, two doors down from Palo Alto's "University Coffee Cafe", a great place to meet Stanford babes who love midnight cruises through the redwoods out to the coast

Is the Alpine Inn on the road from PA to Portola Valley still there? That was a great beer'n'burger place...
