I'll never forget a (nonriding) friend of mine telling me about his first encounter with a V-Max. He heard a terrible crash in the middle of the night and went outside to investigate. Some guy was out cold in his front yard and there was wadded up V-Max a half block down the road. The rider was drunk as a skunk and lost control in a sweeping corner... you could see the gouges he left in the asphalt.

I saw the aftermath of a V-Max crash before I actaully saw a V-max in person. There were still odd bits scattered about in the neighborhood. Heard the kid - it was a teenaged kid it turned out - made it, but was arrested afterwards.

Always wanted one. Almost bought one instead of my current S3T but wanted bigger bags then what would look right on the VMax. It may end up being a second bike someday. IIRC, the Mother Company was a partner in designing that engine.

I still remember the photos of Kenny Roberts, Sr. and Eddie Lawson riding Yamaha Ventures on a track, hanging off, dragging knees and drifting the rear tires.

I had an '84 Yamaha Venture. I can attest to the handling of those bikes. It was the best handling/cornering Touring bike I have ever had the pleasure of riding on.

Where did you get that??? I have the history on tape. No mention of HD at all.

That's a befuddling post.

Must have it confused with the stillborn NOVA project.

A buddy of mine had a Royal Star, which uses a neutered VMax engine. He's usually a reliable source. Maybe he got it from a confused salesman?
Thanks for setting me straight.

Well when the V-Rod first came out, I couldn't help but think of the similarities between the two. Someone post up a picture of them side by side, then look at the placement of certain componants!I cannot in no way say or prove that HD borrowed from the Max, but my mind says so someone was riding a Max when HD ran into tank placement problems.

As far as the V65 vs the Vmax, read my post above. My ole mans 65 had the large Euro fairing on it. With him piloting and me on the pillion, the Vmax casually walked away after about 45-50 MPH, and that was not being polite!

Just another note to add, does anyone remember the Kawasaki 900 Eliminator? Drool!!! Low, long, and mean, and burn the inside of your fricken legs off!!!

Yep sure do. I owned a 85 just before my Max. Fun bike also but even worse handling issues then the Max. The bike had over heating issues and spit coolant on hot days.

I dig the new and old V-Max. I would not mind finding an older V-Max, it would be fun to add to the stable. I wouldn't mind a new one but for that price I would probably go with something else.

As for the V65, no way would it keep up with a V-Max. The V65 was heavier and had 20hp less. I did have the pleasure of seeing a V65 in action. My buddy here in town has had a V65 since new. He took pride that no HD product had ever beaten him, even a turbo charged Fat Boy. One night we were both at the same place at the same time with our bikes. At the time I had the M2. Well he found out three out of three times that the M2 was a good match for him. The closest he came to catching the M2 was after I hit the rev limiter top of second gear. He was still two bike lengths behind.

I've always kinda liked the V-Max, 'though I've never ridden one. This one is sure purty, though...or else it's a horrible abomination. You decide...

dear god, that thing looks sexy. The lines on the bike flow really well, and I bet the power is obnoxious. Cant tell if it is still shaft drive. One of the things I hated about the VMax was the goofey riding position & ergos. It wasnt really sure if it wanted to be a cruiser, standard or crotchrocket, and really did none of them well for my height. But impressive power.

I saw a B-King in the flesh while visiting a local dealer to get KLR parts.

I thought it was interesting, though not really my style, when I saw it in magazines.

In person? Ouch. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it is a spectacle.

That Maxzilla is freaking awesome!

Your about the 65 not outrunning the Max, but it was not a stomp either! Like stated, he casually walked away, with a $h!t eating grin also!
