Wikipedia defines it this way: A squid is an irresponsible motorcyclist. The term is derogatory and common among motorcyclists in North America. It is generally associated with a new or reckless motorcyclist seen riding erratically and/or beyond his or her capabilities, often without appropriate riding gear. | ||

ok we have them here, i think that they are funny, Seen one this evening as a matter of fact. About 18-20 years old, brand new (with the dealer tag) yamaha 1000 R1. A squid moves through the the water very rapidly in a straight line. However, when the squid needs to turn or corner it must come to an almost complete stop to do so. As do many people on motorcycles. Quick in a straight line, but must stop to turn or corner. | ||

Taxonomy: Via Architeuthis (The Great Street Squid) Habitats: Local bike shops, street corners, backroads (With no curves) Coloring: Bright, loud, obnoxious. Commonly the male of the species has multiple anodized bike parts that match the coloration of the rest of the bike. Colors may vary, but are generally offensive to the eye. Locomotion: Most often seen on a large bore bike with tires in poor condition. (In the center, the sides are most often unused.) Can be seen quickly accelerating in a straight line. This species seems to have great trouble with negotiating turns. Current theory seems to lean towards the possibility that the cognitive time/space abilities are not fully developed. Either that or a lack-o-skill. Tests are being done to fully explore the divergent theories. Growth & Habits: The growth of the male of the species seems to be arrested around the 12th year of life. This can be seen quite clearly when observing the critter in it's favorite habitat....a motorcycle speed shop. The obvious posturing and crowing are for the purposes of determining relative ranking within the pack. (Silimar to a wolf pack...only wolves don't squeak.) Reproduction: let's hope not. Adaptations: Custom paintjobs on the vehicle of choice and helmet. Race takeoff tires The standard 'No Fear' decals to make said vehicle go faster. Though I never did full on squiddyness I remember when I was younger and dumber. I also remember when I first started riding some of the stupid things I did and my poor level of riding ability -- well actually the last one is about the same but I am less dumb these days. Lately I have noticed that their are a lot of squids who camouflage themselves by buying cruisers. You can identify them by their brand new dealer leathers, perfectly polished chrome, and seeming urge to ride jacket-less when mounted on Road Kings and other large cruisers. Dude! I define squid as 'so quick until I die'. Squids treat the road as a race track and a stunt pad. They often ride race replicas or the fastest bike available. They will debate the superiority of a Gixxer or R1 or ZX10 ad-infinitum, but it's only other squids who can't see that maxing any of those bikes out is usually beyond their capability. They often wear fluorescent leathers adorned with sponsorship logos for which they receive no sponsorship. Typically the 'B' grader on the track but writes 'A' grade cheques on the road, that his skills can't cash. Squidleyness usually ends with injury - sometimes fatal - but not always. Those that survive or are cured ironically end up with Heritage Softails in old age proving Karma a biatch. | ||

Just to be clear: The expression "squid", far from being a neologism, dates back to the early 1970s American Ski Scene, and it was originally a sort of acro for: Skier With Wet (some say it was originally"white", as in snow-crusted, but I recall 'wet', as in soaked form melting snow) Dungarees ..or, SKWWD. It was later replaced in the American Ski Lexicon with "SPORE", or: Stupid Person On Rental Equipment | ||

What does one call the lead rider in Barkers first picture, looks to me like his "Preparation H" isn't doing its job. The second rider is sitting centered on the seat and his bike has a greater lean angle with what I'd guess the the same corner speed. IMO trust the bike, most riders are nowhere up to their bikes capabilities, myself included. Looks like a show to impress people who know little or nothing about motorcycles IMO. | ||

There are riders who ride beyond their abilities, stunt in traffic, fail to dress in protective gear, and take poor care of their machinery. Sometimes those riders are us. Sometimes those riders are other people. You will hear no approval of these rider traits from me. It simply gets tiring to have the same old sermons when the "squid" thread re-emerges again and again. Halo polishing is annoying to watch. What does one call the lead rider in Barkers first picture, looks to me like his "Preparation H" isn't doing its job. It's Barker too.  I really can't comment as to the efficacy of his Preparation H. I don't recall him having stinky fingers. |
