My wife's mini-van, a '96 Mercury Villager, died going down the road yesterday. So after checking to make sure the recently replaced fuel pump still worked, I went to Auto Zone and got a code reader.

The problem is after getting the codes, P0340 camshaft position sensor and P0325 anti-knock sensor, they tell me that my van doesn't have a camshaft position sensor and the anti-knock sensor shouldn't keep it from starting.

I did have the coil checked and it was O.K. They (Auto Zone) said they couldn't check the ignition module.

Can anyone help and if you can do you need more information.

you need a distributor. AZ employees are mostly stupid so never listen to them for advice. The cam sensor is non serviceable and built into the dist.

Thanks, I guess the resent tune-up stressed things and the weakest link failed. I need to find my receipt for the $600+ tune-up and see what all was replaced.

Thanks again for the information.

ok does it have the 3.0 v-6 OHV? if so it indeed does have a camshaft position sensor, which are known to go, i did 2 on my 96 taurus, they are distriutor-less ignition.

Cyclonemduece,
Sorry, I got back late however I was told that the camshaft sensor was not required by the AZ guy however I still had a code for it. With the sensor in the distributor it would make it a none required part and still exist within the computers memory. And yes it does have a distributor, I ordered one from Advance and have mine ready to pull out tomorrow for the exchange. The engine is a 3.0 V-6 however I believe that it is a Nissan product. The Villager and the Quest came off the same production line for as long as Mercury ran the Villager.

I do know about distributor-less ignitions, my '88 Buick's V-6 is setup that way.

I want to give a big THANK YOU! to New12r (Charles) for his advice. After a new distributor the van is purring along.

THANK YOU New12r and I owe you a cold one when we meet face to face.

Glad to see it helped you out. The 3.0 pushrod Taurus/Ranger motors routinely have a camshaft synchronizer go out on them...
