I had a low quality day today (saturday). I figured I could use a little bike therapy.

I went for a little ride that turned into a longer ride than anticipated. I left the hovel around 6pm and started heading east. It was a nice day, but a little cool.
I ended up heading over US2 (Stevens Pass) to Leavenworth. It is about 120miles one way. There still was snow up on Stevens pass, so it was a little nippy.
By the time I reached Leavenworth the sun was starting to set.
After a little snack I started to head back. It was dark... Very dark. I was riding very conservative. I soon pulled into a rest area to take a break. There was a Church group there handing out hot coffee, and cookies.
I went off to use the restroom, and when I came back I saw a priest studying my machine.
He saw me coming and asked if I need to warm up. He mentioned I looked a little cold.
He wanted to know more about my bike. He didn't think it was Japanese. I told him the basics, but he really wanted technical information. He was just drinking it up. When I told him it was made here in America, his eyes lit up. After marveling at it for a good 15mins. I was really ready to leave.

He leaned over and said (not joking)
"That is the kind of bike Jesus would ride"

How can you respond to that?

After I finally left the rest area, I was dreading the dark ride home. I came up behind a Volvo SUV, also driving conservatively. I figured it would be safer to shadow him, as he can take out the deer better than I can.

We both came around a corner at ~45mph (speed limit 60). Out of no where the SUV swerves around a full grown male buck. The scared deer now is halfway in my lane. I didn't have enough space to stop, so I flashed my lights and laid on the horn. I passed the dear with maybe 2 ft of room.

The scary part was he was BIG, I saw a large set antlers that were close enough to touch.

The rest of the ride was slow and nerve racking as I saw another 3 deer. Luckily the HID light illuminated them far in advanced.

not being and overzealous religous person or nothing, but do you think there was divine intervention when the preacher came over to talk to you about your bike and held you up for a minute more than you wanted. of which that volvo wouldn't have been in front of you and who know's where that buck would have been? or do you think it was dumb luck and good riding skills.
just curious, that's all.

Sory but I don't think Jesus would ride a motorcycle at all. To big, to showy, to flashy. Think humble. 1970's beat up, rusty old moped.(Mule, not Throughbreads)

Great story, never heard "WWJR?" before.
Yea Jesus would ride a moped.
The seating position is better for the robes.

Dunno about Jesus, but some versions of the Old Testament tell you that...
"The roar of Moses' triumph was heard throughout the land"
He must of been handy with the spanners old Moses.

If Jesus rode a motorcycle, at least it would surly be a Buell. He can already ride a cyclone, or a thunderbolt or a steak of lightning, if He wanted too.
He seems to prefer clouds when in sight of folks though.
Maybe it has something to do with that ATGATT thing and sandals.
Whatever He's riding, I'll go!

I don't know about a bike but he doesn't own a car, Jimmy Buffett says so. And if I remember correctly it was Joshua's Triumph that was heard throughout the land, God drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden in a Fury and all the Apostles were in one Accord. Hondas must have been much bigger back then. Those are the only mentions of vehicles that I'm aware of in the Good Book.

Jimmy Buffett
God don't own a car

I have been out wanderin'
I have traveled far
One conclusion I have made
Is God don't own a car

He don't wear no fancy clothes
He'd rather take the bus
He would pay air tourist fare
So He could sit with us

He don't have no tambourine
Guitar or slide trombone
The music we make here on Earth
But the words are His own

And when we finally reach His home
And walk among the stars
He'll join our band then we'll understand
Why God don't own a car

Did I mention I'm a huge Parrothead?

I'm not sure what Jesus would ride, but I know God drove a Plymouth. The Bible says God drove Adam and Eve from the garden in a Fury!

Before I get into this. Can we please keep the religious views civil. Lately I have had too many threads end up on the backfire board... It is getting tiresome.

I am the least religious person you will probably find, so no I didn't believe it was divine intervention.

If I wasn't following the Volvo, I would have found another vehicle.

And good riding skills had nothing to do with it. Infact I could honestly say I showed little last night.

A good rider would have judged his departure time better to avoid the situation entirely (riding while too dark)

If you believe Jesus to be divine, he could or would ride that which provided the required impact for the audience he wished to reach at the time.

Were he alive today, he'd ride a 1950 Panhead for a Hell's Angels member, a Ducati Desmosedici for a sport bike guy, or even a Ulysses for a Buell guy.

"Preach the Gospel always and if necessary use words."

corporatemonkey,

Your idea of civil may not be somebody else's. Nor your idea on what constitutes a clever thread as opposed to a dumb one. Why after starting this thread do you lament "can we please keep this civil?" You opened the thread and asked for thoughts...you're getting them.

Yes I did, but lately a lot of threads get reduced to personal attacks, and massive thread jacks.

That sounds like the makings of a great South Park episode. : )

Surprising how far sound will travel, especially back in the old days when there were no cars around and no high rise buildings. During the war of 1812, when the British were shelling Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, it was said the bombardment could be heard in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, some 50 linear miles away. Furthermore, the Battle of Gettysburg was heard in Philadelphia, some 120 miles away.

Tire Tracks

One night I dreamed I was riding along the beach with the Lord.
We were both riding our Ulysses.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed Metzeler Tourance tracks in the sand.
(only available to Jesus at this time but he hooked me up.)
Sometimes there were two sets of tracks.
Other times there were one set of tracks.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from leaking rocker boxes,
electrical gremlins and a poor set of headlights,
I could see only one set of tire tracks.

So I said to the Lord,
“WTF Lord? You promised me
that if I rode with you,
you would ride with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods in the ownership of my Buell
there have only been one set of tire tracks in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”

The Lord replied,
“The times when you have seen only one set of tire tracks in the sand,
is when I carried you.”

After reading this, I had two observations. The first is that ironically, Jesus rides a bike that is named after a legendary pre-Christian warrior. The second is that while I would appreciate Jesus' offer, I would probably have to pass because there is NO WAY I am riding along the beach on the back of some dude’s motorcycle. Even Jesus would realize that was kind of gay.

Newfie_buell, it's pronounced Hay-soos

Sidenote: One of the project managers at my work is named Jesus and he thought the Dilbert "Jesus" comics were great. He had several on his door at work. But it was really hard to find one online. Apparently there were some who didn't find them that funny.

Wait, found them here

Obviously Buddha rode a Fat Boy. Allah had something good in the sand, the Roman gods all had Vespas and the Kami are split between the Big 4.

Great thread, Jamie! People have been civil, and very cheeky at times! Your deer story is pretty harrowing. It happens so fast that often we riders really have (had) little or no time to react. You were lucky, but maybe the priest DID have something to do with it.

Ready for another oil change at my place? Your XB probably needs a good cleaning (as do you after your close call?...).
