Hello all,

I am posting this for a friend. He has had this reoccuring problem with his 99 x1. It keeps killing his battery. Uke's HD in Kenosha WI said the bike is fine although he still has the problem. My friend told me he can hear some clicking when the bike is turned off. He thought maybe the fuel pump keeps running. Anyway he bought the bike brand new and it has been in the shop five times for the same problem. Buell continues to foot the bill for repairs although the bike has been out of warranty for a couple of years. If anybody knows a solution to this problem please let me know.

Thanks

mike

Im serious, they screwed my bike up so damn bad & then tried to blame it on me. Have your "buddy" take the bike to Hals, they know their shit there.

" It keeps killing his battery. "

If you mean the battery goes dead while the bike is turned off: The regulator could drain the battery through the stator if it (partially) fails, and a power feed goes to the speedo tripmeter even with the key off. The regulator could be disconnected (connector is above rear of shock reservoir), or Memory fuse pulled while bike sits. A meter (reading current) in series with the battery cable (with the key off) should show only a very small current (tripmeter). The key connector can also be disconnected (above headlamp housing) to ensure key switch is not leaking when off.

If you mean batteries die over weeks: Sealed batteries cannot withstand overcharging - they will gradually lose capacity (bike will start with a boost, and then run OK.) Regulator may be intermittent and a voltmeter may have to be kept connected to the bike to see if voltage goes over 15 volts.
Good Luck....

If he's gone thru 5 batteries and they still haven't found the problem..... my boss would really worry about me if I did that.

Is the battery just dead after a day or two? If so, try to find the source of the clicking.
You can hook up an ammeter inline with the battery to see if it is giving current while everything is off.
Then just start unplugging things and see if the current stops.
The usual suspect is a bad diode in the charging circuit.

If the battery just isn't getting charged, there are a couple of easy tests for that. If you look in the KV section there are good descriptions there.

There really isn't anything magical about electricity. The more you learn to troubleshoot your own problems, the better off you are when it breaks down on the road.

Good luck!
