Seen at least 3 of them in my area, southern Orange county. My wife is interested in one. Brian |

There are quite a few of them here in Central FLA. I believe Can Am also makes ATV's. You'd be amazed by the amount of people the swarm to those things to check them out. I've talked to a guy that owns one around me, he says they have a V990, 4 ECU and a sports car's suspension. He also said he's nearly lost it going to fast around curves. I would think it would be more stable than a trike though. Thing even has a truck up front. |

This year at Americade trikes were becoming more prevalent. They were demoing the Can Ams as well. A couple of us were interested in a demo ride but sort of got dis-invited from their tent. Their demo ride started with several stops and turns before leaving the lot which indicated to me that they handled differently from the motorcycles in a significant way. They really emphasize their traction control. We did ride the Piaggio MP3s and they were interesting. They are 3 wheels and handle pretty well even aggressively in the turns as they lay over well and have good grip. They are more like a 2 wheeled vehicle than a normal trike. Only thing I did not like was a kill-switch in the seat that cut the ignition if the rider is not seated. |

I've seen a couple and the first thing that came to mind is snowmobile with wheels. Thing sits so low, there's no way people would see you decently enough in vans, suvs, semis or trucks. (Message edited by buellinachinashop on June 11, 2008) |

That is funny that you posted this. I stopped by a Can Am dealer today on my way home from work and was checking them out. I grabbed a brochure and they're 15,995 for one + TT. They are having a demo day next month and I'm going down to ride one. They look like a blast to ride and are very cool looking up close. While talking to the saleskid, he was probably 19 or 20, he was telling me that it has the same 990cc Rotax v-twin that is in the Aprilia. They are coming out with a semi-automatic transmission this year. One thing he told me made me chuckle out loud was that the Spyder would smoke a streetbike in the twisties. |

I saw 2 on the BRP Tuesday. Immediately after seeing them I saw one of those Piaggio 3 wheeled scooter deals -- now those are strange looking from behind. |

I've seen several in the Sacramento area. I even talked to one guy that owns one. I was tempted to be a smart ass and ask how long before he got to take off the training wheels, but I decided to be nice. |

Cool for some people I guess but I really don't get it for someone who rides. I mean, ya can't split lanes, still going to get hot or wet. No more protection than a bike. Needs a parking space... Maybe it'd be fun to cruise the strip on, not have to put your feet down in heavy traffic and still be out in the open. I had a convertible mustang back in the day, I think I'd just get a convertible car again before I'd want a Can Am. But that is just me. |

Saw one in rural Ky. a few weeks ago on my way to Amish country in Ohio. Kinda cool looking, they were riding two up. I have to agree with Miamiuly, If I'm going to spend that kind of moola on a three wheeler or trike I'd rather go ahead and get a Solstice or Sky for the wife and I to tool around in, now the three kids, that's another story. |

I've ridden one and they are fun! My guess that they will sell to older riders that no longer want to have to hold-up their motorcycles when stopped at a light. I can see me on one in the future after retirement. I talked to a owner at the dealership that rides his all the time and said that his Harley never gets ridden anymore. As for the 19 year old salesman that says the Spyder can smoke a sports bike in the corners, just remember, he's only 19 and doesn't know his s**t yet! No way they can corner as well as a sportbike and I doubt they can keep-up with a full dressed bagger either! But they are damn fast on the straights! If I remember correctly, they turn about 120 hp. |

ne thing he told me made me chuckle out loud was that the Spyder would smoke a streetbike in the twisties. I spoke about my experience with a spyder in the other thread, but I would take the bet that a spyder could out corner a sport bike. The Can-am has stability control that has a low thresh hold, but it does have 3 sticky automotive tires (large contact patch) and a very low center of gravity. As long as the rider was able to move about the seat (ie lean) I would say anything short of a shifter kart would struggle to keep up. |

I have a friend that lost the use of his left arm and messed up his legs some in a bike accident. He loves his. I rode one, and I'm not ready, yet. I will say that if I was, The Can Am is a bargain, compared to any other trike. |

I saw a guy riding one by San Luis Obisbo, CA yesterday. He seemed to look in an uncomfortable riding position to me. Still was probably having fun though. |

I wouldn't take that bet either. Maybe the skill of the rider would have more of an effect on a true road course, but on a skid pad that thing will absolutely SMOKE any two wheeler, no ifs, ands or buts about it. It's like comparing Formula 1 automobiles to MotoGP bikes. The bikes will accelerate harder out of the turn and into the straight, but the car will carry a lot more speed THROUGH the turn because it has a lot more rubber on the ground (of course, the ground effects aerodynamics don't hurt either). |

One question: how do you keep the tires out of the middle (greasy) part of the lane? Seems to me that no matter your lane position, one tire will be in the slippy (greasy/dirty) part. |

The middle part of the lane is only greasy: 1) At heavy trafficked intersections, 2) Toll booths 3) Shortly after the start of a rainfall The rest of the time, it is as good as any other part of the lane. But you do bring up an interesting point. If there is a large object in the road, it'll be a lot harder to avoid it with a three wheeler than with two or four wheels... |

They look like big snowmobiles with wheels. I've seen a few of 'em around central FL. There were a bunch at Daytona Bike Week this year. |

I rode one at last years Americade. I didnt like the handling at all. It went and stopped just fine. It was actually pretty quick. I liked the trunk space and it looks cool but turning it was rough. It took a lot of work to ride it. Not like on a bike where you just lean a bit and there it goes into a nice turn. The Spyder you actually had to "man handle" around the corners........ |

I see it as an option for folks who would never feel comfortable riding a motorcycle but want to do long distances in comfort with a passenger and gear. My dad would never ride a motorcycle, but he would ride one of these. I'd get one for my wife for the same reasons. She would feel comfortable riding one of these and would be more comfortable with the car like handling vs. motorcycle handling. I haven't ridden one yet, but my understanding is that unlike a motorcycle, you don't push out on the inboard grip to initiate the turn. You steer it more like a car, turn left go left instead of push left go left. I wouldn't discount the handling vs. motorcycle. Given equal power and probably three times the contact patch it'd be a contender. Add in ABS, a really low center of gravity, and having the ability to be your own monkey, and this would be really fun to run up and down Deal's Gap.

I was fueling my bike one day here in SoFl and saw a guy and girl on a yellow one sitting at a light. Warm day, both wearing helmets. I just didn't know what to think and decided that I just didn't get it. As I and others have said, I can see it appealing to some people- and it can help others continue to get out on something close to a bike, so that is cool.
