Thinking of buying this as a second toy. Don't want to spend a lot and want something to ride while working on the Buell? Anyone have or had one? http://allentown.craigslist.org/mcy/712575153.html

It's got a charging problem? For $1200, it should be running with no issues for that age. IMHO

Well he said he would come down to $1000. It may be an easy fix, I'm not sure.

FWIW, from the description, I am guessing the bike has a bad voltage regulator.

Why get another road bike? - get a cheap trailie or dual sport - something to broaden your scope/garage.

Dual Sport - exactly.

Going to be a little more $$$ but something in the 400cc+ class of bikes (DRZ400 or KLR 650 maybe) will get you from here to there.

Many of the older "superbikes" were all too often ridden hard and put away wet.

My wifes Brother had one and my Buddy had one new.. both the same year as that one. Both had the same problem and it was the Stator. Replace that and it'll be just fine. They are pretty quick and comfortable. See if he'll take 900 and steal it.

I had one. It was my first bike. It dropped a magnet off the rotor so I would say it had a chragining issue as well.

Nevertheless I fixed it. Winter came next deployment next move and finaly after a year and a half of sitting. I cleaned the carbs put fuel and a charge on the battery. She fired right up. I was amazed.

I paid less for mine along time ago.

I would pay about 1 dollar per CC as well.

Why did the motor need to rebuilt(and just what exactly was done) at less than 24K?

And 1K miles in 3 years? I bet it needs the carbs cleaned again. Kawasaki's are notorious for super rusting in the fuel tanks. I would maybe offer him half what he is asking.

Chain, sprockets, tires...what all does it need in the normal wear and tear department? Could get expensive...

Well I went to look at it. I guess the genius thought I didn't want to hear it run. He didn't even charge the battery before I came. I told him to call when I can hear it run.

Old jap bikes can be costly to repair.
I would suggest walking away from this one.
The owner sounds like a clown.

There are plenty of good-running old jap bikes out there that you can buy for about the same amount of money.

Maybe there are no trails to ride in his area. Or maybe he just doesn't like off road riding.

Am looking at this one now. Owner said he is willing to drop as low as $1400.

Sunny has a 1984 VF500 Interceptor that she keeps running. Parts are pricey but you can get new/old stock parts online. You might go have a look and see if the prices scare you off.

We use Powersports Pro for our "dinosaur" sportbike stuff http://www.powersportspro.com/pages/home/default.a spx
There's nothing we haven't been able to buy yet from them to keep the older bikes running.

She just rebuilt her carbs - and we got ALL top end gaskets (molded weird shapes, NOT cut from gasket stock), carb gaskets, springs.

She has TWO of those vintage V4 500cc Hondas and keeping them running hasn't been a problem... just not cheap. You have to love the older bike or just be a glutton for punishment... or just buy one running and ride it til it dies and walk away from it.
