I was riding the Uly today with a group here in the DFW area. Pulled over and filled up with gas, leaving the station the bike stalled like I had fouled a plug. I restarted the bike and it ran fine. So I continued on, during one of our turns I was on the throttle hard and leaned over and the bike started popping and sputtering like I had lost all power and then it was running fine again. My first thought was "Bank Angle Sensor", but the longer I rode it the more random the behavior became. Under hard acceleration in 1st through 3rd would warrant a bucking bronco ride with all power loss to gauges. Then BAM it would kick back alive. I have had the BAS recall completed already. Anyone have an idea of what this could be? |

Check all connections, especially the wires to the ECM. |

Thanks Glitch, That was my first assumption, but I wanted to let the Sage's of BW speak here first and hear the wealth of experience and knowledge before I go poking around the bike. 1 question, is the BAS in an open short type of sensor? If it is goes bad will the bike stop running. Can it be bypassed? My ears are still open. |

Every one that I have heard of, including two of mine, BAS failures will shut off the bike and it will not come back to life until you re-cycle the start switch and restart. Check the battery cables first. If they don't have a washer under the bolts to shim them up a little, try that first. Many have had the bolts bottom out just as they tighten up, they feel tight but they will loose connection intermittently. I had a factory spliced connector come apart in the harness where the steering head wire loom holds them. I caused the symptoms you are describing. I had to unwrap the wires and solder the connection, then re-tape. I also found that the wires that cross over the front cylinder breather hose were worn through, taped them and put a hose sleeve over them. If it hasn't been checked yet the front plug wire can lay on the idle cable and wear through too. Make sure the plug wires haven't come loose from the coils, and check that ECM plug for worn through wires and cracks in the plug. Piece O' cake! |
