Don't race in the rain...in fact, don't even ride in the rain, unless you do so behind someone who flat-tracked in the 1960s.
You can not learn anything from any other rider.
Only 1960s flat trackers.
All other advice will be incorrect, and, as such, likely to bring about catastrophic results

This young 1972-74 Unadilla (Jr.s X class) regular, competing in mud each weekend, couldn't possibly know jacksiht about riding in wet conditions, some 36 year later

'scuse the threadjack, but i was looking at old pics and found this one funny- my dad didn't go for any long hair, and he sure didn't want it showing on the track, so-
my brother and I were given the directive to keep our hair at a length that wouldn't stick out of our helmets, so we pushed the fashion envelope by keeping permanent helmet head haircuts.
some kids had 'bowl cuts', we had 'Bell cuts', as dad used to say....and we'd dammed well better have a flag on our helmet

It was an amazing ride, as I'm sure you more-than know!
problem with competition, though, was that at a class below and above, it was matched up against 2-strokes, and I really had to be inventive to compensate for the lack o' power band.
Sucked when I outgrew it, and we had to try to keep a CR maintained...that's when placing in competition was done, for me, outside of flat-track

Being smoothy smooth in everything you do is the key; braking, cornering, accelerating.

I do make adjustments to my riding style in the wet, more so than just keeping the bike in a higher gear. I occasionally push the envolope when it comes to trail-braking in the dry (I've been bitten by it before) and this is something I try to completely avoid in the wet. From my own experience, it seems the really dicey part of wet riding is before the apex of the turn and this is where I slightly change the procedure... I do all my braking in an upright position and stay totally off them during the turn in. I try to be smooth all the time, but I try even harder when it's wet.

It goes without saying to stay off the paint, but if I find myself entering too fast and I start getting too close, I'll purposely let the bike go into the oncoming lane (IF I SEE IT'S CLEAR) instead of fighting to stay off the paint. This move is only step from disaster though, and it's always a sign the pace is too fast for my skill...

... and that brings me to the first thing you should change about your riding style in the wet: SLOW DOWN.

Even professional racers go slower when it's wet and I can't tell you how many times I've seen a complete GP race in the wet without one rider lowsiding.

I can keep up with him until I scare myself... then it's like that joke about dropping your keys in lava; don't reach for them because, buddy... they're gone.

Hallet is a big fast Go-Kart track, to bad they don't have races around the lake at Garnett, Kansas any more.
Bejesus the Garnett back straight is called the "Santa Fe Straight" because it parallels the old railroad track, the straight away is a mile and one eight long and the corner before it is called the Flat Iron Sweeper so you were humming 3/4 to 7/8 speed or better long before you would hit the chute.

Nice try, picking and choosing your responses. Your presumptuous line about riders here responding to the racing in rain question as being stoplight-to-stoplight riders was pretty ignorant.

Curious to hear how it goes today for Mark (Wolfridgerider) - MAAAANNN - there's a whole LOTTA racin goin on this weekend!

Rain frankly scares the piss outta me.

3 years ago, I was starting to get a handle on sliding the XB on slicks and we had rain starting at Willow. Didn't have enough rain to justify putting on rains - besides rains DO NOT WORK on dry conditions past 2 laps (softer than qualifying tires) I bought a set of Pirelli Supercorsa in blue (front and rear) - and used my tire grooving tool to cut grooves out to the edges of the tire.

Raced once, and got my first ever podium in light rain... and got too cocky. Next race 45 minutes later I high sided, got hit by two others and spent the next 4 months in a wheelchair with spine, ribs, ankle, shoulder breakages and subdural hematoma (good part about brain injury is no memory!).

I treat rain with respect and next time would also reconsider my tire selection too!

Never saw a flat track race that was run in the rain,was in several that finished that way though.
We were poor boys no Hunt mags for us,we ran total loss ignition.

The OP asked a serious question and got some reasonable replies, he also got some smart ass ones also,rubber shoes,umbrellas, stay home, ect.

Sorry, I just really like that new emocon where the little guy pokes the other guy in the eye with a stick. It seems like that is what is happening to you lately on this thread, so I couldn't, in my mentally weak state, help but to pick on you. Both are racing MotoST as 2/3 of the Pair-a-Nines team (with Jimmy Filice) and

Springsteen was ONLY racing the BIG flat-track (mile) races on the XR for Bartels and other sponsors until last season... but I'm betting he won't quite give it up yet.

Watch On Any Sunday once again - those kids in the opening sequence are now Springsteen's age... and some of you younguns think of him as an old guy.

Jeff Ecklund's ladyfriend sent us some pics of the last Pair-a-Nines racing. Kinda cool seeing the old farts still winning.

I'll have to find and post a couple.

Now weren't we talking about Wolfridge in the rain on the roadracing or is he flat-tracking in the rain?

We've gotten so off topic, I lost it all.

Really want to hear how any racers are doing!
