While getting a ride to lunch today, I noticed my friend has a Obama sticker in his window. Strange, because a few weeks ago, we all took a little on-line quiz that matched you up with the candidate that best fit your ideals. This guy had more republicans listed as fitting him than I did and Obama wasn't even listed. As a matter fact, he didnt have any Dem's listed.
He believes in the second amendment and the right to defend yourself by owning firearms. We've has several discussions about Mr. Obama's stance on the subject.

Did I mention that my friend is African American?
When I asked about the Obama sticker and why he would vote for him, he replied "I'll be honest. Mostly because he's black"
I decided to let it go at that but feel I've lost about 80% of the respect I had for him. Can people really be so short sighted as to vote against all of their ideals for the sake of race?

Types like that dont make up enough of the population to actually make a difference by going to the polls if they feel like casting a vote for those reasons. IMO

"Can people really be so short sighted as to vote against all of their ideals for the sake of race?"

sadly, yes. i think that if everyone stopped worrying about the race, sex, age or party affiliation of the canidates and just voted for the one most qualified for the job we'd be much better off.

Why do you think that we keep getting the leaders that we do? Some of the best ones get tossed out early because they don't have the looks or charisma or name.....

There is a great possibility of having our next president be someone with absolutely no experience yet, no telling he may be a great one. You just never know.

let's be honest- in a field of black candidates, with only one white one, wouldn't most of you honestly vote for the fellow caucasoid?

Hmmmmm...... your friend know about the other part of him that is rarely mentioned? Yeah, he is also white. Hard to cast one half of a vote.

No. It would depend on who was running. Really. And I am as white as a saltine cracker. }

Uh, I've ridden the Blast in freezing rain, snow and one severe thunderstorm with a microbursts and tornado warning.

Unfortunately, I didn't do them on purpose.

As for voting for a fellow white guy, I've voted for the Natural Law Party, Clinton, Bush I, Bush II, Mondale, Anderson, Ford, Nader. Hellsbells I'll vote for ANYONE, including Court.

He's not running is he?

People shouldn't be afraid of the government.
Government should be afraid of the people.

Business interests run the country and all politicians do their bidding. I'm not convinced it make any difference who is in office. Any initiatives proposed by an idealist elected official will be watered down in compromise to the point it's an ineffective exercise.

I propose we ban all handcarts as that may slow our decent into hell.

Obama will be our next president.

It sounds cliche, but I really would vote for who I believe is best. In fact, all other things being equal, I would lean towards a minority or a woman, just because their differences might bring a little new insight. Of course, all things are never really equal...

I wish we had a strict constitutional constructionalist who is a fiscal conservative... but we seem fresh out of those.

Ironically, my beef with Obama is that he has made several comments and had close associations that I believe to be bigoted. I ignored the first, but they seem to be stacking up. Had a white made those statements or had those kind of un-renounced associations, I would have dropped him in half a heartbeat, no matter how else he may agree or disagree with me.

I'm a lily white male and I have no problem voting for a female or for a black. What I do have a problem with is voting for this particular woman and this particular black. At the local and state level I have voted for woman and minority candidates BECAUSE THEY WERE THE BEST CANDIDATES!!! I don't give a rat’s arse where their great great grandfather was born or which bathroom they go into. I just want good government.

I want government that spends less, grows less and stays out of my life as much as is reasonably possible. I want government as much as possible to keep its hand out of my pocket. I want a President who appoints judges than interpret the law, not make it. But like Mick Jagger said: “you don't always get what you want.”

It's less about race and more about what race implies: commonality. Many blacks feel cultural connections. At the presidential, it's really about whether you believe he's a person of character and strength. It's easier to believe he'll make judgements like you when he looks like and has lived through the same struggles as you. So, I don't believe it's cause he's black. It's cause "he's like me". "Black" means more than skin color, just look at a history book.

A bucket of sand would be better than the leadership we've had for the last two terms.... I used to be a staunch Replublican... now I say to hell with all partisan politics.

I embrace what ever change we are going to go through.

I would feel much safer with Tramp. He is a known commodity.
