My 99 M2 is about to drive me up a wall. Today coming to work on the expressway at 70 MPH, 20 minutes into the trip the bike dies, well not dies, but feels like someone cut the spark, I pull the clutch in and it idles at 1000 RPM. Let out the clutch and give it gas, it backfires and sputters and I clutch it and it idles at 1000. It does this for about 1000 yards and it takes off. Now on surface streets and it does it again. When I pull in the clutch, it will rev and idle fine, let out the clutch and it sputters backfires and dies. The only thing I have noticed is that it smells like it has some oil in the exhaust. Could the cylinder puke vents be putting oil in the carb causing it do drowned out?

If it were the side stand switch, why would it pick and chose when it wants to work? I could see if I just put the stand up and started to take off and the switch still thought it was activated, but 20 minutes at high speed then it decides to act up?

Sidestand switch is the bet. Why? Contacts get corroded...current flows sometimes and other times it cannot overcome the resistance. Bypass it is my repair action.

When my sidestand switch crapped out, the symptoms were just like yours.

Same symptoms for me..... and after the recall replacement. Mine is snipped now.

It's picking and choosing because it's intermittent contact, and it works fine when you pull in the clutch because the clutch bypasses that switch.

If you're not worried about taking off with the kickstand down, snip and wire them together.

What I noticed on my 96 S1 was that the wires and connector rub up against the swingarm. I cleaned up the contacts on the connector put some grease in there and then zipped tied the wires tightly against the frame this way they can't rub and work their way loose. haven't had a problem since.

Just finished "Parking Lot" MC repair. I sniped and twisted them together. Let us hope this was it.

My sidestand switch does it sometimes,

I sprayed it with rustcheck and its working again for now.

When it finally craps out it will be gone.

Well, I am pleased to report that since snipping the switch in the parking lot of my office the other day, I have had NO MORE PROBLEMS! I think you all solved my problems, keep your fingers crossed!

I had a problem with the switch on the clutch as well but once again a spray with rustcheck and the damm thing worked again. That little red colored lubricant works really well on all kinds of stuff.

Justin -- 10 to 1 you've got it licked, sir . . . so many folks have had the same symptoms, and cleared em up the same way, you should have clear sailing (riding?) from here on

Sorry to chime in so late, but the same exact thing happened to my 2000 M2 a few months after I bought it brand new. Lucky for me, I read about the kickstand switch problem here on the BadWeb and was able to fix it on the road side.

It might be three years too late, but thanks guys!

Hello everyone i am new to the board but have been riding a buell for a couple years now. My current problem sounds similar to a side stand switch, maybe? Today after riding appx. 180 miles i was on my way home. On the highway the bike started spit and sputter like it was running out of fuel,i had plenty. I would pull the clutch in i ran the same, then i lost all electical power, lights speddo,odometer, and as the bike was dying as i coasted the shoulder tach was jmping all over but engine was not revving high. As i sat on the shoulder waiting for a ride i turned the key on and was able to start the bike but when i rev the engine the gauges go haywire and the bike backfires and revs poorly. Now at home the battery doesnt have enough power to turn the engine over. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Rich, buy a new battery. I caught mine just before it went tits up. Tach and speedo were jumping. Then it wouldn't start even though when I plugged in my charger it looked like it had a charge.

Rich,

This past week I did not ride the bike as I was neglecting her and was having an affair with the new toy (95 Saab 900SE Convertible).

Somehow the bike got wind of the new toy, became jealous and decided it would not start.

All I heard when I hit the starter was click, click, click.

So I was ready to purchase a new sealed battery when I decided to remove the old one and attempt to charge it. When I went to remove the negative terminal I could remove it with my hand. Appears the cable was loose therefore the bike could not charge - tightened it up and I am back on the road again.

Check your electrical connections on the Battery before going any further as you might have a real cheap fix.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think i will try a new battery. I checked all the connections i could think of and i ran some of the tests from the service manual,starter and ignition relay,diodes, voltage regulator. A dead battery would make some since, and easy enough to try.
