So a co-worker and myself were checking out a 1989 FXR that was for sale by the original owner. 39K miles and a sweet bike. Anyhow the topic came up that a fellow by the name of Erik Buell had designed the FXR for Harley Davidson. This is the first I've heard of it and now I'm looking for info to back this claim up. Anyone know anything? I love the FXR style and performance. One of the best HD's ever made in my opinion. Now if a guy by the name of Buell had his hands in out it, that would sweeten the deal even more!

When in doubt, go to Wikipedia...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Buell

Look in the Motorcycles and motorcycle racing.

They're as accurate as their input:

From the Spring 2008 Fuell (Buell Lines)
Hope it is readable, opening sentence Erik talks about working on the FXR platform.

I have an 87 fxr and love it. It handles like a dream, for a harley. I can really make it move through 129. I have had many people come up to me after i pass them in the dragon an complement how fast i could go. I finally pushed the bike to its limits and decided to buy a Buell. I kinda like Erik Buell and the way designs motorcycles.

Go to whitehorse press and check out the "25 years of Buell" by Court Canfield and David Gess. There is a pre-production "read more" section that has a 16 page teazer from the book. It covers the fact that yes Erik did work on the FXR that all the Hell's Angles just love.

i've got an 83 fxrt and i believe one of the things he worked on is the steering neck and this bike from what i've been told was even wind tunnel tested for the fairing on it.

Erik did a lot to make the FXR series excellent handling bikes. For instance, he designed the anti-dive air control system for the front suspension on the FXRD, FXRT & FLT models.

It had a solenoid controlled air accumulator piped to the top of the forks that could effectively increase the overall spring rate in the forks when the brakes were applied or allow a floating smooth ride otherwise. The air pressure in the accumulator could be adjusted to stiffen the ride for a passenger or your favorite twisty road or soften the ride for freeway cruising.

The man's a genius!

I had my '99 X1 parked next to my buddy's '89 FXR and we were going over the similarities whilst on our way to Bristol for the AHDRA races.

Oh, almost forgot, he was telling me that my designer also had a hand in his, hence the similarities.

I had an '84 FXR and put 80,000 miles on it. I traded for a 2000 Softail Nightrain and missed the FXR!

i was always impressed as to how easy it was to take a corner on it.

besides the fact that if i really wanted to put the bike back on the road quicker i could dump an evo into the frame instead of the shovelhead, this bike already had the wiring harness set up for fuel injection from what another guy had told me.
