Ok Court...you said stock...so you are prolly right on the bone stock s1 will not power wheelie :-) But the originator of the question didn't say his bike was stock...he listed his mods...so I was using his list of mods to determine if the bike should power wheelie...and it should:-)

Yeah, i was thinking along those lines AL. I hear alot of good stuff about thise mikuni's. Is it a pain to change the jets on those?
I said I had a stock engine, meaning no internal mods..like heads or cams. Sorry if that confused anyone

Jay. I always like to be able to contradict Aaron. The cheapest horse power you can get is NOT a dyno-tune. You said you'd had the carb off. At the END of a riding season of lack-luster performance that I was attributing to a bagged, high mileage engine, I just noticed that my throttle cables weren't adjusted properly and at WFO I was only getting about three quarters throttle. The rotating plate on the carb should be hitting the stop. Mine was more than 1/8" away. What a waste of some good rides! Check that. Actually, to fine tune it better, take off the air-filter and see that the butterfly valve is completely horizontal at WFO (with the engine off, preferably.) I think it may even be possible for it to go beyond fully open if the stop is a little bent.
BTW, you ask about Lightning heads and cams. You've got that already, stock. The Thunderstorm heads came the following year on some models.

Yee hah! Damn, if I haven't been a friggin' idiot! Not unusual, really. But shit! What a lazy idiot! FYI, with bagged out Lightning heads and cams (80k,and PROMISED a rebuild this winter!), a Sporty will get two inches of air momentarily with a throttle whack at 3500. With clip-ons and my fat ass on the seat. With drag bars and a tug it would probably have lofted! Check those cables!

Sporty I had a 96 S1 with 3" breather, Vance and Hines, carb re-jetted and it would tq. wheelie in first gear at 2800 every time. Be careful as to how much you whack the throttle. You can flip it real easy. Also rack your self at the same time if your caught by surprised. It will jump up like a two stroke. And yes if you had a dyno sheet you could see were your peek tq. is and that is your rpm. number you could do it at. It won't do it in second unless you rocked the throttle. You can also be chugging in third and down shift to second and crack the throttle and it will wheelie easy. But you have to do it at the peek tq. rpm. It will jump up like a two stroke. |

my dead stock except supertrapped 96s1 would power wheelie 1st and 2nd, but the supertrapp had to be welded 5 times in 4000 miles. Now i have a pro series, power band is all top end but it seems to be holding together |
