Why did my speedo stop working??
I was on my way home last night.... look down to see how fast I was going...
No worky
On my way to work today... it worked for a little bit then....
No worky....
I've got about 25000 miles on the Uly and less than 2 months of warranty left.
If I can't get it fixed, I will drop it off at the dealer.... but I don't wanna do that if I don't need to.

Hmm... I just pace the fastest car going by me...

Got a volt meter? Check the output of the VSS.

Check the speedo sensor. It is held in by one bolt just above and behind the front pulley on top of the motor/tranny. Sometimes it gets some metal flakes on it and that can mess up the magnetic pickup.

This has happened to me...I will note it stops working a few times during several rides in a row...I cleaned off the sensor and it won't happen again for 6 to 8 months. One time simply changing the motor and primary oil stopped the problem (the sensor is exposed to the oil).

mud muck corrosion on the speed sensor, and maybe a thwack from off road riding ; ) That is why mine failed.

Was this a 'speedo' that you were wearing with your 'ass-less chaps'??? By failure did it snap under load? Perhaps it became a thong instead(you know...folded in the back like butt floss)? Did something personal fall out? Did your intended visual targets quit looking? Did you thwack it(on or off road)? Did you have an "accident" that it couldn't handle? Did you try to put three gallons in a half gallon bucket? Did your parts arrive somewhere before you? Have you been refused service at a drive up window?

How about a little more information so we can help you figure out how your speedo has failed.

Did......aww.....that is all I could come up with in a hurry.

i've had the speedo sensor on the other m2 go out a few times and the last time, what ever happened, it burnt a hole in it from the inside of the motor. but that will usulally stop your speedo from working.

Hey, Mark, do a site search for speedo sensor problems on your model; there is lots of info in the Knowledge Vault, but some of the most helpful stuff I was able to come across was elsewhere on the site. The speedo on my Firebolt died on Sunday, and was able to find out that the '03 models are prone to sensor failure due to the amount of voltage being supplied. That shouldn't be the case on your Uly, but I'd just go through a basic check first, and make sure that any connections are secure, and try removing the sensor (easy) and making sure there isn't any metal particles stuck to the face of it. There is a magnet inside the sensor, which can attract particles of that missed 1-2 shift. The presence of those particles can dampen the "magnetic view" of the sensor to the point that the passing teeth become unreadable. Or, if any magnet takes a whack, it can dramatically reduce it's strength, and I'll bet that's what killed the sensor on Brian's bike. But hey, if the bike is still under warranty.........

He's trying to avoid the awesome dealers we have in the area. Why not just swap it from the 'bolt and see if it works?
