Granted my b-day is three weeks out yet.

On the 19th I will be an official employee of the Union Pacific RR.

This will make it a tick over 60 days on the gov payroll. I stop being one stat and become another one.

Next up will be finding a shop building, with a house located in the immediate vicinity.

Congrats on the new job.

What exactly will you be doing?

I always thought working the rails would be cool.

All the livelong day?

Enjoy your new job, hope the honeymoon lasts.
I always wanted to have a go on one of those handcart things with the rocking beam; like you see in the films.

Yes, all the livelong day!

I am going in as a Diesel Electrician -
Electronic Technician. I get to ply my trade and training from the aviation life to locomotive maintenance.

Starting out as a journeyman due to my background. Another one of those jobs you marry though. Some of the others starting with me will not make it.

Pay is more than respectable for around here.

This was my first go at attempting to get a job with Union Pac. From what I have heard, getting hired on the first try. Is nothing to be sneezed at.

As a side note. Since I started this process and had the initial interview. Everyone I have spoken with has said "welcome to the family".

The big thing for me, is I now can grow some roots. In the past ten years I have been on the move almost constantly.

I'm betting that with the costs of fuel continuing up, you will see MORE use of the rail system. Nothing against trucking, but the overall fuel efficiency of rail shipment compared to ANY other form of transport is HUGE.

Congrats!

Yup, and it's really not all bad for those of us in trucking. trains can't get the freight from the customer to the rail yard or the other way around
, so while some long haul work is taken away it creates more local rail yard shuttle work from customers to rail yards.

Loki- congrats on the job. I'm a former railroader too; two years on Norfolk Southern back in the 1980's. You should have a very interesting job. I try and stay up on the current technology somewhat; it's amazing how far they've advanced in the last ~20 years.
