LONG story short...
I was recently in a class where the professor, a woman, was discussing the woes of publishing books under her real name, how names are forms of identity, blah blah blah. I asked, because I was curious and knew she was married (to a man),
"So what's your husband's last name?"

She took a deep breath looking very annoyed and explained how she was offended by "that" term, and would prefer "spouse."
WHAT!? So I then asked
"Ok...what's your SPOUSE'S name?"

She answered and continued speaking...but I couldn't let it go. More out of real curiosity than wishing to be confrontational I said:
"So wait, is the word "husband" or "wife" now considered derogatory or politically incorrect??"

She said, "Yes, and those words have never come out of my mouth."

Did I miss something?! I'm a Marine and can be a bit rough around the edges, but COME ON.

When I told my wife the story, she said, "Sounds like her husband's a real _____" (use your imagination). Did I mention I love my wife?

Just thought I'd share, and see if I'm the only DOG still referring to my wife as "my wife."

I think the source of her agitation comes from the "implication" of ownership, I.E. "My Wife", or "My Husband." Some of these weenies think it sounds possessive.

Wow! where did that come from? Sorry if I offended anyone.

so no one says "my spouse"?

...oh the stories I have from my ex-girlfriend's "women's studies" class.

Did you know that marraige was invented by men? Yeah, see, the wife's- er... female spouses family pays for the whole wedding just so the husband can divorce her a few months later and keep all the gifts.

Craziness.

When we had our first son, we (men) were refered to as "birthing partners" rather than "fathers".

Here's a short list of some more fun stuff we've covered. It's been hard to keep my cool, for obvious reasons.

-The U.S. Military is an immoral and destructive force, which can be directly linked to almost all the world's ills.

-"How many people died on 9/11/01?" She asked
"Approximately 3000 Americans." I reply.
I am informed that the number was 25000 from world hunger.

-Missiles, small arms weapons, nuclear strategy, etc are all phallic representations of man's desire to dominate women. Missiles "penetrate" targets like...get the idea?

-War is man's doing

My response one day, when I could no longer hold my tongue, went something like this:

"So what are we supposed to do? Not act? Sit in a little bubble in the academic world of a university and write about it hoping to change things? I've been to Iraq twice, Haiti, Kosovo, Djibouti, and at least as Marines we're ACTING for our country. Do I disagree with strategic policy at times? Of course, but at the end of the day, I am trying to make a difference. Whether providing humanitarian assistance or destroying our nations enemies. While I understand the necessity for, and appreciate the contribution of academia to military and national strategy, there are certain things that you simply cannot realize while trapped in this nice, safe little world. While our nation is certainly not proud of everything we've ever done, I submit that we are striving to constantly improve ethically and morally. Am I the only one around who thinks...I don't know...that America is the greatest country in the world and we're all privileged to even be here?!! Has anyone ever even been anywhere else besides the Bahamas for Spring Break?"

...or something like that. It was a bit of a rant.

The best part is I had to pay for this class. Hooray for my liberal education!!

Did you ask her why she felt that the terms husband and wife were offensive? I am curious what reasoning she would have given. I understand the "possession" issue to some degree but jeez. Maybe she is a cult member of some borg-like robot religion.

BTW I would have responded to her that "spouse" offends me and that I preferred "co-life-partner-technician, status:male" or simply "groomotron".

I happen to like the "O" word Charlie, somehow I don't believe we are talking of the same one though.

Uly1080-If what was the subject, or class title? I took a Philosophy class that the instructor would have loved your instructor. He was basically if you don't like the way the world is, this is it get use to it. His theory's, while a bit biased at times, wer arguable, we could carry on an intelligent argument and nobody's feelings got hurt over anything.

Amen Brother!

Your a better man than me.
You should audio record this crap. Debate it professionaly. Do excellent in the classwork. Then if you bad grades in the end because you are "dicriminated against", send it to fox news. I would be a field day for that news outlet, and not their first time doing so.

I have no respect for the majority of academia. If you are a professor and your ONLY accomplishment in life is a doctorate, you have absolutely NO practical experience. I'd bet dollars to donuts that this "wife" hasn't done a thing in her life but live in this little bubble.

The best professor I ever had was a grizzled old guy who had retired three times from C level positions in publicly traded companies. He had DONE and THEN he taught. He taught from experience not from theoretical case studies.

I thought he was bad ass, and sought to emulate him. His greatest accomplishment wasn't being a professor. Coming back to teach us knuckleheads was him giving back.

This lady is a pompous ass.

Interesting,

Here in France, the word for wife is "Femme", which is also the word for Woman, Husband is "Mari" hence the words Married Marriage etc etc.
However, as far as official documents go,the words "Epouse" (wife) & "Epoux" (husband) are used.

I call my "Significant Other" Madame.

In Europe Truck Drivers catch most of the stick, after all we're responsible for; Global Warming, the oil crisis, death on the roads, traffic congestion...........

Yeah right.

Maybe the reason she cant get published has nothing to do with her name (hell nom de plume has been around for centuries) it could be that her thesis is unfounded, her research paltry, her conclusions baseless, her anecdotes off topic and her logic failed. Sheeesh womens studies.... There was a movement at UofW to get them to formally accept "HerSTory" as a major. Because yes, the entire worlds documents were all reported, written archived and catalogued by men, that is why it is called 'History' : | You know if english is the only place this trype occurs? In Russian a man "takes" a bride, a woman "walks behind the husband" She should be so lucky not to be offended daily. She wouldnt last one harsh winter in Moscow , Azzhat no talent drama clown
