MAN that's a big bike for a dirtbike! Heck I can't touch the ground and I'm not all that short at 6 foot. There's a whole lot of plastic as well so dropping one will mean a trip the the bank THEN the dealer. I can see why the are so liked though. It'd be just the thing the have if you wanted to bomb around off road BUT not trailer a MX bike around. Plus you could get two for the cost of a Uly!

We've met with Hayes (their facility is just an hour away)

They've actually ridden 2 of their prototype civvie Diesel KLR's over and they are truly going to be cool - once they can meet CA requirements and still meet their USMC contract requirements.

Get on their mailing list:

But weren't those going to be $10,000 KLR-650's? Cool, no doubt, but pricey.

The older ones have less (and cheaper) plastic. And on the older ones, you likely care a lot less if its all scratched up. The hacks and gouges fit the character of the bike.

Look at a KLX-250 also. It might work better for you then you think...

Reep swears by his 250. I swear by my 650. I dont go offroad that much and have certainly put the miles on. Its a great commuter and all rounder. I enjoy it very much. It could never be my one and only bike though as it dont got enough up top for the long haul.

Those KLRs are big, but the Honda 650 is even bigger, believe it not (my local all-in-one shop had the Kaw, Suz and Honda 650s all sitting next to each other).

Reep,

I am planning on getting a KLX250 in the next couple weeks.

Sunny bought herself a Yammie XT225 on the condition that I'd buy myself a dirtbike... so I called my buddy Kevin Jump who runs Advanced Kawasaki - and I've decided that the KLX250 is the way I'm going to go for my dirtbike.

Those diesels are really cool. They DO make 100MPG. Over 400 miles in a tank.

That engine is really no longer related to the KLR. Just a few tranny components in common but all else is a complete redesign

Yeah, a bit pricey when it finally makes it.

Is the KLX250 electric start Steve? I am pretty sure it is.

I got my ass kicked on what turned out to be a really advanced Enduro ride last Sunday. No racing, just "have fun and make it through alive" event.

It was planned to be hard but doable, but then it rained more then they thought it had the day and night before. Conditions looked good, so they went forward with the race, but things almost immediately degraded to a literal quagmire.

I made about 30 miles of the 100 mile trip before hitting the "ravine from hell"... Short run up to a 15 foot steep (now pure wet clay with 2 foot deep ruts) hill face, then a hard turn, then another 50 feet of elevation through what looked basically like motorcycle sized tank traps.

Anyway, by the time we got my KLR-250 out of there (pretty hard) and got my buddies XR-650 out of there (really hard) we were pretty much toast, and the sweep riders caught up to us a bit after that and we were done.

An incredible amount of fun though, and the best exercise I have had in years. I "crashed" a total of 6 times... 3 of which were when I was not on the bike trying to walk up and down terrain that I just rode over without a problem (which was pretty cool... I can ride places I can't walk, and I am not even that good on the dirt yet).

So naturally, having seen all those guys on those "serious" enduro bikes, I come back and start researching.

I was amazed to discover that the KLR250 "ain't that bad". 260 lbs, instead of maybe 230 lbs. Sure, 30 pounds is a lot, but I should be able to overcome it, and I have a 30 pound margin elsewhere that I should be shedding ; ). 20 HP at the ground instead of maybe 30 or 35 HP. Again, a big difference, but not so much that I should not be able to go anywhere I want... I'm not racing here.

The kick start was my biggest obstacle. When I got really tired, I started falling over. When I fell over, the bike would flood. When the bike flooded, it took a lot of kicks to get it running again, which made me more tired, which made me drop the bike more. Nasty little circle : )

So anyway, having looked around at costs (and costs of making it street legal), that KLX-250 is actually looking like a sweet little bike for the money. And you will probably find it a LOT more fun on the street then a bike like that has any business being.

I'm loving the Kenda Trackmaster II's for the dirt. Got front and back to my door for under $100 : )

KLX is electric start.

Yeah... it adds a little weight but I'm getting freaking lazy in my old age and will gladly pay a 10 pound price to be able to push the button when my legs are thrashed after a couple hours.

I'm looking into the KLX250 a bit - it is pretty new and want to see if it is for sure what I want to play with.

I've got about 2 weeks to get a dirtbike before Sunny kills me for breaking my promise that I'd have one.
