Didn't quite finish, but I made it to 425. I was reading with the laptop running Google earth, and every time he mentioned a town, I’d pull it up and end up spending a few minutes zooming and panning around. The Snake River Gorge and HWY 12 though Lolo Pass in Idaho look worth the trip alone. It’s interesting (not curious, but rather pleasant) how his philosophical discussions move with the terrain. It reaches the height of abstraction at the top of the mountain after traveling thought the 'high' country and as he now descends toward the sea, the discussion comes back down to everyday concrete examples. 100 pages to go... Dfbutler - I'll have to look it up... nick (Message edited by naustin on April 25, 2008) |

I rode Lolo Pass last summer http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/6817/297210.html?1186686129
What a great ride and fantastic scenery. We were there for a Tiger rally but I wished that I was on an adventure bike. Those unpaved roads looked like a blast. |

Mike - How did I miss that thread last summer!? I will be doing that trip someday too. East this year, but next year maybe I'll go west.... Nice job on the ride report too. Man, that looks like fun! |

I finished the book over the weekend. Overall, I really enjoyed it. It left a great deal unresolved, though. I suppose it is up to the reader to delve into the journals of philosophy to discover whether or not the sophists have ever been vindicated and whether the author's ideas were ever formally acknowledged anywhere in the "church of reason". I doubt it. The arete concept definatly resonated with me at the end, however. Well, back to 'reality,' I guess... |
