What the general opinion of people on these boards? Do you guys think the upgrades to the '08 models outweigh what I might save by buying a leftover '07 or '06?

I think it depends on the model. I believe the only difference in the Lightning models is a 25th anniversary badge. Thats why I am choosing to save $1800 on an 07.

There is more to the Lightning, or any '08 XB than just a 25th badge. No TPS resets, self cleaning plugs, new oiling system, etc.

several engine changes as well, not the least of which is no more TPS resets. Also redline was bumped up a little due to some mechanical changes in the engine.

Self cleaning plugs?
OK, getting off topic here... I know what the changes are to the '08's... the question is: are they worth the extra $$ that could be saved by finding a leftover '07 or '06, in your opinion?

Well I guess I have been corrected. I had asked that question at the dealer that held the demo rides last week and the answer I gave here was the answer I got from the dealer. Sorry for passing bad info. Were the 07 models having oil delivery issues to cause the change in the system?

My wife and both thought it was worth saving $1300 to take an 07 on her CityX. That was on one still in the crate before the the dealer had even taken delivery of their first 08.

No - that was done to prevent the chance of it happening - it was not a common thing at all. In as far as I can tell from all my reading on the topic - it was like this Golden Deal - Buell would bullet-proof the air-cooled motor and in return he would be allowed to get the motor he always wanted - a win-win situation - I'm sure I'm wrong, however, thats kind of how it looks in hind sight.

For peace of mind - even if the 07 where half price, I'd still get the 08.

I would spend the extra to get the 08.
At time of trade or resale you'll get some of the extra cash back.

The changes in the 08 engine are worth paying for, IMHO. They've really taken the last common reliability failure points and fixed them. The oil pump drive gear, the rotor nut (now a stretch bolt), the timing pickup, larger crank pin, all add up to a much more reliable engine in the long term.

About the only 08 change I'm not crazy about is the higher temp fan set points. I suspect that's an emissions mandated change.

IMHO the new oil pump gear system may be the best single reason to buy an '08 model.

Last year Al showed me an oil pump drive gear, he said, had about 20k miles. The Top Lands of the gear teeth, were as I recall, worn to the extent that they looked the sharp side of a knife.

Now whether that wear happens to each and every ThunderStorm engine, or only those with lax oil change intervals, I don't know. But it looks like I will be pulling my engine apart soon for an inspection. (I am not looking forward to this job either.)

Self cleaning plugs?

Yes, meaning you don't have to pull the plugs if you foul them, to me a very nice feature.

Wow, that's saying a lot. Not sure if I agree though.

I have an 06 and have not had any major issues once she broke in.I think if you plan on keeping it stock then save the money, If you plan exhaust upgrades and ecm stuff maps or race ecm then the 08 does not need tps resets so it might be more convienient

Thats at really low rpms - never hang there and as much has been said of earlier models fi. The beefed up bearings, gears, better fi system, etc. = if it was just 1 improvement - I'd say don't bother, however, there are a whole bunch of improvements - meeting almost all past complaints head on and then some.

"the 08s are also having problems with surging and low speed running"
As far as I know--I tend to keep up with such things : )--in the '08s are running as well as any motorcycle out there. I've heard of a few issues, but no more than normal for most any motorcycle.

The spark plug cleaning feature won't clean fouled plugs, just wet slightly dirty ones. Still a very nice feature for those who like blip the throttle.

I most appreciate the new oiling system, the beefier crank pin, and the automated TPS rezero feature! HURRAY for Buell!

I don't know of any other motorsports company that responds so well to customer suggestions as Buell Motorcycle Company.

I have had the low speed throttle burp a few times, but I dont consider my bike to be broken in yet. I reserve judgement until I get a few thousand miles on it. It only happens at lower speed and low rpm when you blip the throttle. From what i remember (I havent been able to ride this year) it only did it when the bike had been really hot.
