I took my 2001 S3T Buell in to have the rockerbox gaskets replaced back in March. When I went to pick the bike up the service manager told me the mechanic did not let the hydraulics bleed out long enough and the end result was that the valves hit and they were having to replace the valves. I overheard another mechanic say that the head was actually replaced. My question is, are Buell heads interchangeable with Sportster heads and would I be able to tell to the difference. I've usually had good service with this dealer but things have changed drastically in the past few months. It's really difficult to tell if my bike is back to normal as I didn't ride it all that much previous to this. My Harley is my daily ride. Also, there is no mention of the repair work concerning the heads and valves on my invoice since they covered the cost of repair.

Well first off, good on them to replace everything as needed.

In general, the heads on your S3T are different than a run-of-the-mill Sportster head. Someone will probably correct me, but I think the head from an XL1200S and a Buell of the same vintage (they called them "Lightning" heads" are the same, but I may be, and probably am wrong.

It can't hurt to ask, but the the heads are different enough internally that you'd be able to see that you had something different.

One thing about that "...the valves hit..."
statement. The valves hit WHAT?
If the valves hit the pistons, make sure they replace them, too! Pistons are pretty tough, but if one hits the valve you can bet there's damage to the top of the piston, too.

I prefer not to discuss the reason I know this!

If I am correct the 01 S3 had the Thunderstorm engine with the all important thunderstorm heads that are different from the stock sportster head. Thus the black color and greater horsepower achieved among other internal engine mods to the Thunderstorm engine. If your cylinder heads are two different colors then I would guess that you have a set of mis matched cylinder heads on your bike
