Newfie,
DaveS. has a beautiful black S3 that Jprovo has been trying out all week. I'm sure if you ran down here he'd let you take it for a weeklong test drive.

The only way I can get the S3 is if he will agree to sell it cheap - I got a line on one here for $8900Can. and then he would have to get it across the border for me. Once its across the border I would not have any problems with customs but if I buy it on your side then thats where Customs gets nasty.

Milwaukee is definately going to be very very difficult to forget.

Already starting to think about Homecoming or just a trip up that way next year.

Will post an adventure once I get my pics back and scanned.

The best part of the ride home was in Quebec about 100km from the Quebec/New Brunswick Border. I had passed a cop on a BMW bike at about 120ish kph (75mph) and thought great he did not get me seeing the speed limit was 100kph (62mph). About 15 minutes later as I was in the fast lane doing 135ish kph (85mph) I noticed a car in my mirror about 12 inches from my back wheel. My first thought was who is this arsehole so I naturally accelerated to 150kph (93 mph) and was just starting to put a little space in between as the car could not accelerate as fast as the bike. I was just about to pull into the slow lane when I saw the flashing lights in the grille and the sirens. Oh SHIT, I am screwed now was my first thought being in Quebec I don't speak french very well at all (I only know enough to read signage and understand the basics). So in my best french I say "Bonjour, Je ne pas parlez francais tres bien!!! translation=Hello, I do not speak french very well. All the young guy did was laugh and say I will speak english for you - now his english was not much better than my french. I told him "I was going a bit too fast" and he replied "yes, 147kph in a 100kph zone but I am interested in your pipe. I looked at him confused and puzzled and replied "Pipe???". So with his left hand on his sidearm he asked me to stand in front of the bike while he proceded to get on his hands and knees with a flashlight and shine it up the slip on Vance & Hines Canister. He takes my license, registration and insurance goes back to the car for 10 minutes and I really expected him to give me a lot of trouble. He asked where I was headed and I told him home. He then explained that the pipe was pretty loud when I started to accelerate away (almost WOT) and that the pipe was illegal in Quebec and other provinces in Canada. He then told me he would give me a break today but to TRY to keep the speed to 120kph (75mph) as they don't bother anyone at those speeds.

He wouldn't let me take a picture of the bike him and the police car for my scrapbook.

My view of the police in Quebec is totally different now.

Take care all the full adventure will be posted with pictures of the places I have been.

Did I mention that Milwaukee is going to be very difficult to forget

Newfie -
Tell Bubba that the S3 you want needs to have a "T" after it, and be a `98 or newer. If you can do St. John's to East Troy on that S1 w/Corbin, you should be able to ride an S3T to Sidney!!! (or at least L.A.) Wish you could have stayed longer, glad you are home safe.
Screech on `ya...

Hello!

I had quite the adventure on Saturday. I left Durham at 6:00 am CST to head north into Virginia. Near Pilot Mountain a dense fog set in and I had to pull over to put on my rain gear and get all the fog out of my helmet... very beautiful morning, but not great riding.

I got into Virginia and saw cop after cop but none pulled me over. As I headed into West Virginia there was a drop in temperature with storm clouds forming... put on all of the rain gear and rode in the rain off and on through Charleston and into southern Ohio.

Took a short cut up 35 North and 32 West to Cincinnati... up a river valley where there was a huge steaming nuclear power plant with three towers working... could not get out of that area soon enough.

Had a quick lunch and headed into Cincinnati. Of course my map was not detailed enough for the route I chose... I got terribly lost in Cincinnati and ended up adding roughly an hour to my trip....

Rest of the journey was pretty good. Little rain and made good time up through Indianapolis area... the bees were incredible up there in the corn fields, kept hitting my face sheild and splattering pollen all over the place... my jacket is covered in yellow spots.

It got dark about an hour south of Gary Indiana (due to my scenic detour in Ohio....grrrrrr). Got into south Chicago around 9 pm CST.

To my chagrin the hotel was in a really crappy neighborhood. The place looked like a southside homeless shelter... shit!!! However, the desk clerk was very helpful and I ended up locking up the bike in the hotel lobby. Got some groceries.

Didn't sleep too well. Got up yesterday at 6:00 am and rode into Milwaukee by 9:00 am and met up with my man. I met a bunch of his friends and we went out to breakfast.

We started North by noon. Arrived in Shawano, Wisconsin by 3 pm. Spent the rest of the day relaxing at Bob's house.

Now we are just getting ready to ride the last hour home from Shawano (75 miles due north to Pelican Lake).

All in all the bike performed very very well. I am quite pleased. I also am not real sore because I took a good three days rest in Durham last week... saw lots of friends from college... ate well... slept a lot.

Quite the adventure. Only bad thing I can think of is it is almost over. Tomorrow by noon I will be sitting back at my desk at work wondering what I am doing. But it was great!

Thanks to Chris for letting me stay at her place in Milwaukee, Bear and his family for escorting me to North Carolina, and putting me up in Lexington Kentucky... Ray Price HD/ Buell for servicing the bike last week...Bubba for the welcomed entertainment in Statesville... Bomber for loaning me his saddlebags...Jason for lending me his toolkit and all the other Buellers who inspired me with their journeys.

Talk to you soon!
;)Charlotte
Keep on riding!!!

Mrs. Crusty and I spent a good part of yesterday morning looking at maps and roughing out a route to Newfoundland. I think the first or second week of August would be a good time for a rally there. Our kids will be away at camp, and we could both go. We could make a big circle; ride up through Maine into New Brunswick, over through Nova Scotia to North Sydney, then ferry to the island. On the way back, we can follow the southern Nova Scotia coast to Yarmouth, then take the ferry to Portland, Maine.
My wife was disappointed that she couldn't make it to the 20th, so I owe her a really good trip to make up for it. She loves the idea.

Crusty,

That date would be excellent time to visit the island. The weather would be very co-operative (unlike the searing heat during the 20th) and the whales would still be off the coast for a good experience.

I would recommend that you land in Port-Aux-Basques and then return back to the mainland by way of Argentia. That way your not duplicating your route.

I have given some thought where I could show you people around as well.

Newfie-
I threw the 2004 New Foundland Tour past the wife last night. Of course she asked "Is this some sort of motorcycle thing?" If I can make it work I'm game for it.
How far was it for you to Millwaukee? I may wimp out and trailer the bike over to New England to save time. I'm getting tired of riding across states like Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio just to get to the good riding.

Mike,

Do you need a trailer partner?

Seriously, I was thinking the exact same thing. I started reading about this Newfoundland trip and thought that would be pretty cool. Then I looked at an atlas. It's got to be 3000 miles from Minneapolis! I have just short of 5000 miles on my M2 for this whole year!

Hey, if Newfie can ride to Wisconsin and back on an S1, you should be able to ride to Newfoundland. My M2 loves eating miles. I have to agree with you about the road situation, though. They'll be pretty boring 'till you get into the Northeast. But from New England on, they should be pretty neat.
Next year, August 1st is on a Sunday. How does the 1st through the 7th sound? Or maybe a little less, if people need a little more travel time?

This isn't a bad idea...
I realize most of my time is spent lurking but I'll be at West Point next August. I think the "New" ride home will be great. I can plot some points to include some good haunts in the North East. I'm glad we've finally got some action up here. I've been busy for Carving up the NE.

If your serious I will start to tentatively plan a ride to tour parts of the island.

This place is big so you may have to come back year after year to really apreciate the beauty.

Spidey has started a thread in Storm Fronts already so go there.

For those of us living "west" of the Great Lakes, how about riding north through the UP, drive across at Sault Ste Marie, and head east from there? Or, take the states route and pick up bikes as we go?
