Is there a run down of general S1 info?

Stuff like I.D. differt versions...S1, S1WL etc

Just looking for a better understanding of S1's so I know what I am looking for/at when buying.

Thanks
Chris

S1s were made in 96, 97 and 98 with few changes.
In 98 it was also available as a S1WL which had Thunderstorm heads (101 claimed HP) which were painted black, an exhaust with a larger diameter primary and collector plus a stainless steel muffler. The 98S1WL also had a larger tank (5.5gal vs 4).

The S1WL was initially available only in a pearl-white body and arctic white frame/wheels but midway through the year they opened it to all the colors.

The S1WL has VIN ID "YS" while the S1 was always "SS." (The RS/RSS/S2/and S3 were all "RS" )

In 2000? the battery in the S1 was discontinued and a kit was made to adapt the Blast! battery to the S1s.

Someone else needs to chime in with the "twin tail" story 'cause I don't know it.

I've got a 96 S1 that I picked up this past winter with 15k on it for 4k plus a clapped out zr750. The 96 didn't have the Thunderstorm heads so it is rated at 90hp@6k. Its a small light 1 up bike, the later versions were a little bigger in the seat/tank area. Also besides the Thunderstorm heads at some point they became DDFI (98 ? or 99 ?). Also get the vin of the bike you are interested in and run it to see what recall work has been done. Mine had none, could be a problem if you don't have a good dealer. The guys at Kosco HD in Butler, NJ did the recall work quickly and professionally also mounted the battery kit for me. I pulled the top end down also to see what condition it was in and everything was in tip top shape. I get parts from Willams HD in Lebenon, NJ they also seem like a good bunch of folks. Do all wrenching myself, Harley engines are very cool to work on (simple big parts). Would would say 4-6k is reasonable range to pay for one in decent shape.

The S1 evolved into the fuel injected X1 in 99.

>>>they opened it to all the colors.

Rainbow Paint Program = 4 frame/wheel colors * 4 body colors. Combinations of all iterations were produced.

Josh: did you get your build sheet ?

Weren't the same build sheets also used for the S1, M2 and S3?

I believe Court is referencing the build sheet that followed my RS down the assembly line and should have neat little details about the bike on it.

Aaron, I thought the Overseas bikes had different sized tubes as well as collectors, or was it just the collector that was different?
