From tailofthedragon.com...

TAIL OF THE DRAGON EXCLUSIVE – The State of Tennessee is spending more than $200,000 of taxpayer’s money to add overtime patrols at the Dragon this summer. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is receiving a $75,000 grant and the Blount County Sherriff Office is receiving $125,000. These grants will last through the summer and end on September 30, 2008.

Why even bother going there at all?
They obviously don't want anyone to go there.
Are they even bothering to stop oversize vehicles from going in?

That's not illegal... Just a very bad idea.

It's not illegal to be on the road, but it's not possible to get through legally with a tractor / trailer (will cross the center line several times).

Is it really Draconian to enforce speed laws when barely a day goes by without somebody crashing on the Dragon because they were using a public road as a racetrack?

No, but when you're pulling everyone over it is. Try going 35, and not get pulled over.
Me, I'll stick with North Georgia, and North Carolina.

If anyone is ever around the Virginia/Kentucky border around Big Stone Gap cruise up 160 over Black Mountain and into Lynch.

I didn't count the curves but there were several that were hairpin and would turn back on themselves. It's the highest elevation in Ky. Last time I was on it we only passed one car coming the opposite way and no one was going our way. There are tons of twisty mountain roads in the area that would make a great day trip.
