I am stationed in Japan. They sell Harleys on Base but sometimes they are not really any better of a deal compared to what I can get out in the Japanese Market. For the life of me I cannot understand why on base any Harley is marked up 4000 dollars from get go. You would think that on base we could get a "semi normal" deal. Anyways, The wife and I found a really good deal on a sportster out in town. But The VIN numbers reflect that the bike is made for Japan. The ones on base are VIN'ed for America. We plan on keeping the bike when we return to America in 2 years. Does anyone know how hard it is to get a Japanese VIN'ed Harley registered in the USA? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I don't know about motorcycles, but for cars it is usually just easier to sell the car before returning to the states and buy again. |

I know you can get sweet deals on bikes ordered throught he HD military reps for delivery to the states. Friend got a Road King for almost $4500 off retail. Delivered to Sandy Eggo when his boat got back from the Gulf. Not sure about the local deals there. If you want, I can see if he's got the link but they actually had reps from HD board their ship when it was docked in Dubai! |

Thanks Slaughter. You can defintely get a good deal on one waiting for you in the USA when you get back. Especially if you by it in a tax free zone. I was thinking of this option but the wife is on board with the idea now so I need to get the ball rolling while she still wants one. I am wondering if I will have problems getting a HD that I bought from the Japanese market registered in the USA. |

My $.02: I think you'll find that it will be a HUGE ordeal in terms of red tape, bureaucratic BS and such just to get a used Sporty to the US of A- not to mention the cost. Keep in mind that you'll always be able to find an equivalent or better bike once you get back, for your time and money spent. Don't get sentimentally attached- plenty of good rides out there.... |

Keep in mind that to come into Ca. it has to have at least 7,000 on the odometer thats how they made it hard for guys and gals to buy out of state bikes" non Cal emissions bikes" and then bring them into California, with less smog aparatuses on the bikes, at any rate I'm sure you have to have the 7.000 miles first and formost, you'l find squid's right it is a BIG HASSEL |

There is an exemption on the mileage (7,500) for active military who bought vehicles out of state and return to California. |
