I was driving my 99 M2 to work today and all of the sudden, it acted like it was out of fuel, I pulled the clutch in and rev'ed it up several times and all it did was bog, the RPM's were at 800 or lower from a cruising 3000, then all of the sudden it took off and acted normal. This happened three times on a 20 minutes trip to the office. The tank is full, I use 92 rated gas. What do I check? Spark (ignition) or fuel delivery? Justin | ||

...is the fuel tank vent hose kinked or collapsed anywhere? check the knowledge vault for info about the side stand safety switch. | ||

I checked the tank vent by blowing in the end of the hose with the cap off the tank and it is clear, the side stand switch looks clean and clear of road grime and grease. IF it were the stand switch, would that cause it to bog and not die? I have full lights and power, just dropped the RPM's to below idle. | ||

Are you still running the stock airbox? My S2 had an aftermarket foam filter element when I got it and it did something similar when a flap of foam flipped over and choked out the carb. | ||

I'd probably start looking for wire shorts then, or fuel blockage. Is it running better now? Might have been some water in the gas. The sidestand switch can't really be visually inspected since the contacts are internal in it. If the problem has for the moment corrected itself just ride and bring along a few tools in case the problem surfaces again. Are your rocker vents vented to the air filter or externally? If your vent lines are run into the air filter then any big injestion of oil spooge would probably have been visible with a cloud of smoke, but it's another thing to look at. I think someone recently posted about their coil wires getting thin and shorting out, or their spark plug wires. Might be something else to look at. Intermittant problems are sometimes a bear to chase down. Hope this helps some. | ||

It ran fine the last leg of the trip to work, it was as peppy as could be. Good question on the rocker vents, I have no idea. I have had the bike less than a week. Justin | ||

The next time it happens pop open the gas cap for a couple of seconds and close it. There's a tip-over shutoff valve in the tank vent fitting that can occasionally stick shut causing symptoms exactly like you described. Momentarily opening the gas cap vents the tank thus allowing gas to resupply the carb bowl. This problem happens to my 98 S3 but strangely only when it rains!? Sparky | ||

One other thing you may check is if the intake has frost on it. Happens when you use regular fuel. Maybe the station screwed up or is ripping you off. If it is let the bike sit for about 3-4 minutes and restart it. Usually works. |
