I'm having my 4 choppers pulled. What should I, or shouldn't I, do to make this process a much happier one? | ||

Doctor wanted to pull two one day and two later. I had him pull all four and was done with it. He gave me some thick gel stuff to use to fill the holes for about a week. In pain for a day or two then fine. | ||

Rinse often with warm salt water. Are they just pulling visible teeth or are they impacted and being surgically removed? Don't breathe on anyone for a week or two...you will have some nasty breath. | ||

Don't use a straw to drink with. You may end up with dry sockets. | ||

Mine came in straight, but I have a bad cavity in one, so the doc aid to get them all done at one crack. What about eating regular food? Bad idea for a few days? | ||

I highly recommend that they put you to "sleep" for the procedure... I despise the dentist, and being awake for this procedure is far from fun. Because in my case they did not "pull" the teeth, the smashed them and then pulled little bits out. And having someone chisel away at your teeth while you are conscious is far from pleasant. Because you feel the force that is required to shatter the teeth, not to mention the horrible cracking and crunching involved. (Message edited by interex2050 on March 25, 2008) | ||

That could scare a guy into good dental hygiene! Some good advice from the group. Do it right and you won't have any problems. The sleep thing is the best advice. No pain no strain until you wake up. Then there are the little pain pills that take care of that. Don't forget your antibiotics, most important. | ||

I had 4 done at once. 2 were impacted and they pulled 2. Gave me some really goods meds to take before I got there. (dont drive yourself) I was just about out of it when I sat in the chair. the next 2 days are a blur, but thats about it. I hear some people have a rougher go with it than most, suppose that depends on the skill of the dentist and what exactly happened. Anyhow, you get some good meds for post Op as well. these will be your friends. sweet dreams | ||

I highly recommend that they put you to "sleep" for the procedure... I second that recommendation. I also recommend that you have them all done at once and be done with it. I had mine done on a Thursday and was back to work by Monday. Go ahead and stock up on pain meds...don't get behind the 8 ball on pain management. | ||

"Regular" food is a bad idea for awhile plus you won't want to have to chew any more than you have to. Soft foods and soup. | ||

Wear a cup . . . . . . . . . . . See you you have forgot all about those teeth once you start thinking about the boys being okay.  I had my uppers pulled when I was in college because they kept chewing on tissues that was a bit on top of the lowers. Dentist said there is nothing wrong with the lowers, so leave them in. Said there is a higher risk of a "dry socket" (whatever the heck that is) on the lowers because of draining I guess?? None were impacted. I went to work that night, with pain meds, and a mouth full of cotton packed back in my jaw. I would see no point in removing healthy teeth, if they are not causing problems. Mine were done in pairs, left then right, so I coul chew on one side. My dentist wanted to ensure that I got nutrition to help heal. Nitrous oxide...it's not just for racing, great for dental work. I was, therefore, awake, but quite content. The removal was more like taking a tire off a rim than "pulling." lots of prying. The only pain meds I took was Ibuprofen. Back at work the next day, with bloody guaze in my mouth. All told it wasn't too bad, but mine weren't impacted. Oh, and don't be surprised of your gums are a little sore until any dislodged bone framents find their way to the surface say 3 days later, while you're on jury duty. | ||

I would get a second opinion. The last time I went to the dentist (besides two weeks ago) he told me I needed to pull all four. As luck would have it I've had three kids since then and going to the dentist was the last thing on my list. Went a couple of weeks ago (different dentist) and verbatim from the dentist, "Boy, you're lucky to have enough room to keep all your wisdom teeth, most people aren't that fortunate". What the...six years ago they needed to be pulled and now they're o.k. Soooo, unless they're giving you grief you may want to consider a different opinion. Just my $.02. | ||

Still got 2 of mine. 2 came in straight and after years of careful brushing and flossing they had to come out. One loosened up on it's own and the dentist just yanked it in the office. The other required the old needle. I didn't want to be awake for the fun.  | ||

Liquid Valium is your friend... I once had all 4 wisdom teeth AND 4 pre-molars taken out in one sitting prior to getting braces. Didn't feel a thing, out cold- but halfway through the procedure I heard a horrible crunching sound and opened my eyes, only to see the oral surgeon yanking away. He then instructed the nurse to give me another hit of LV. I had my buddy (Pre-dental student, got to watch the whole thing) take me home, with the tape player cued up to Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". I was good and buzzed, until later in the afternoon, when I got back to work rebuilding my RZ350. 8 teeth gone, bled for a week, OK otherwise.  | ||

had all 4 out in 1 sitting. Woke up 1/2 way through, that wan't the least bit fun. Me and pain meds do not get along so I didn't get to enjoy the rest like most folks. But wasn't too bad. Just don't eat anything too hot or too crunchy. I got sick of pudding and ice cream after 1 day  The salt water rinse is also a must. | ||

Get knocked all the way out. I've gotten a bunch of teefs yanked, and it's the only way to go. Oh, and for the record, implants are far superior to crowns, veneers or caps. I can chew ice cubes like I'm 10 years old again. | ||

Get the GAS!! For many many years I hated going to the dentist. With Nitrus I would almost go just for the heck of it. Pulled a broken molar and two wisdom teeth in one day. | ||

+50 on the knock out IV, had 2 molars and 2 wisdoms taken out in november, no straws and no smoking for a couple days, no solid food either soft stuff, bread, soggy crackers in soup, i couldnt eat any pasta tho. Beer goes good w/ the pain meds!!! um, wouldnt ride too much on the pain meds, but if the Shoei fits a little loose normally, prolly fit ya again the next day | ||

Just get them all done and over with.. Why waste your time and have to go through the drama of all that numbing twice. I had all 4 done awake in 95... then had to walk a mile and half back to the barracks in 90+ degree heat.. I got 2 days off atleast... They gave me motrin for mine.. 800mg motrin will do the job I just had crown done last week and good old motrin still does the job.. I'd also make sure they plan to stitch them closed.. Mine weren't and it sucked.. I got Dry socket a month later and sucked worse than the day they where pulled.. It took me a good year for holes to fill in all the way.. Good Luck...... |
