I think it's a cyl. head temp sensor for your fuel injection.

Okay- I guess that was the placement on early X1's?
My '02 temp. sensor is more toward the center of the head...

Huh? The O2 sensor is in the rear exhaust pipe.

it could be one of two things, depending on if it runs to the flux capacitor or not.

Yes,
that would be a 99 or 00 temp sensor. My 01 has it in the middle of the rear cylinder head. It sure looks easier to replace in that configuration
