CA-190, that sounds familiar. Is that picture in the Panamant valley?

Jim, it's very close to the Panamant Valley if not in it. Now what might not be obvious is the, ahem, speed with which we are trying to out run the impending storm with. Jim set quite the pace. I believe Denise took that pic over Jerry's shoulder against a nasty off right head wind. Said speed and wind was just right to pull about a half quart of oil out of my S3's breathers and air filter and all over the right side of me and the bike. It was a great run until got to the 395. What a mess.

: D That is the road I wrote about when I told the story of the oncoming headlights that took several minutes to reach.

I too was making quite a pace, my personal best is on that road. And then some bulb lights up in your head and says "I bet it uses a lot of gas to run this fast," and you look down the road and wonder where that next fillup is coming from.

hi Jim (and Glenn), it's just a tick west of the Panamint Valley, not long after climbing up out of the valley, about 30 minutes southeast of Lone Pine, California.

we were indeed "hauling arse" and the storm you see over FMJ's right shoulder had me plenty concerned.

it's truly lonesome country out there and i'm glad you got to see some of it on your ride back across the country. : )

here's another lonesome shot, just a few minutes outside of Lone Pine on Hwy 136:

Fireman Jim is on point, then BBStacker, Unibear and me 'n D. we got lucky and didn't get wet. the peak you see directly above BBStacker is Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the continental United States.

a pretty remarkable journey, considering that about an hour before we'd visited Badwater, the lowest point in all of North America.

This is quickly becoming my favorite thread . . . . I love these photos, the folks and the roads. It brings back many wonderful memories and is a reminder how darn many places there are to ride in the United States.

I may buy a motorcycle.

curve

That was taken at Deals Gap... which is a lonesome road, during a rainy weekday, which is when this picture was taken.

And for the record, no, I did not blow the corner. When riding alone, I take a line that:
(a) Maximizes my visibility through blind corners.
(b) Is the most fun.

The net effect is that I use the whole width of the road, and actually curve each corner further, rather then try and straighten them out with a racing line. I ride for fun, not for lap times.

Look closely at the front wheel track versus the rear wheel track. It gives a hint at just how incredibly complex a process the normal motorcycle turn really is.

(oh, and photo credit goes to Zee Photo, I bought the rights to it to use how I want, but she took and gets credit for the picture).

another shot of 158, this time at ground level, estimated speed 50 mph, engine off and coasting (for miles), foot hooked under the brake pedal so i could lean back far enough to get the speedo in the shot.

it's best to do this kind of thing on a lonesome road.

it was 2 o'clock in the morning when i took this shot. it's too dark to see the road in the photograph, but it was very lonesome.

Death valley at 2 am on a motorcycle? I think I saw that on an episode of "Survivorman" once! Yikes!

I love the idea of coasting for miles engine off as well...

That sunrise picture is great...I can imagine the freshness in the air as the dew is about to get burnt off the sage brush. I would love to be breathing in that air right now.

This is a very dangerous thread, makes me want to go for a very long ride, a very long ride.

Mike, screwing up the courage (financial, moral, ethical, family, work, commitments, obligations, fear of the unknown) to do the first one is the hardest. subsequent long rides get easier and easier to rationalize and justify. : )

Death valley at 2 am on a motorcycle?

Reep, that was some of the most intense riding i've ever done. DV is pretty lonesome during the day, and especially so after midnight.

i spent about 20 minutes in that spot after i shot the photo, lights off, no flashlight, but able to see quite well simply from star-shine, snacking on trail mix and jerky to regain some stamina (this was towards the end of an almost 900-mile/24-hour day in the saddle), listening to the heat shields tinkling as they cooled, and finally listening to nothing but my breathing and my heartbeat.

i've ridden thru DV many times, but this ride was very different from all the rest.

That sunrise picture is great...I can imagine the freshness in the air as the dew is about to get burnt off the sage brush. I would love to be breathing in that air right now.

Freezerburn, thx, and well said. you've got some lovely riding country in BC. i've done the Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver up to Whistler many times, and the run up to Lillooet past Duffy Lake is second to none. thx again.

this was taken just outside Seligman, Arizona during the BRAT/Matt cross-country ride with Gentleman Jim Attebery. it's sad how much of historic Route 66 got obliterated by the construction of Interstate 40, but this particular chunk that got spared is truly sublime.

another lonesome section of Route 66, this time in Oklahoma:

you know the road is lonesome when you see this done to an innocent road sign.
