I have just learned that in three months I will be out of a job. After that I get 10 weeks of severance pay so the good news is I have some time to find a job but of course the bad news is i need to find a job.

Anyone who hears of a purchasing agent type gig in the Milwaukee area let me know.

I am also looking for writing and photography gigs as I have done a fair bit of freelance work so I am interested in that also. I was hoping to keep working full time for a few more years before kicking the freelance writing stuff up bu I may have to do that sooner rather than later.

Relax, Dave, by the time your severance and unemployment benefits run out, you'll be rolling in dough from the book!

Seriously, look at this as an opportunity to find a gig you really enjoy. Us, um, experienced guys need to make these decisions based on quality of life as much as $$$.

Good luck!

It is getting tougher to reinvent yourself these days. My plan of living as a motorcycle bum has not come to fruition.

I'll be beating the bushes soon myself.

>>>It is getting tougher to reinvent yourself these days.

How so? I keep ending up in the darnedest places! I can't imagine a time in history when there has ever been more opportunity.

Dave . . this is exciting! Having worked with you, both at Buell and on the book, I'm betting you are within months of beginning one of the most exciting chapters of your life.

Look at it this way . . . we can always go sell $110 a barrel oil for RT!

As of tomorrow I join the ranks of the downsized. 'cept I get nothing as the door hits me on the way out....... Ten years with this company, going where they said when they said to be there. The good part is the people I have met on this merry journey I have been on. In the past ten, I started out in Mlps(home port to me). Moved on to central florida which then had me going to Detroit. Hung out there for a bit and went east to Delaware. Then traveled a short a short hop into central PA. Pissed in the boss' wheaties ther and ended up back in arkansas. The journey ends here as I try and plant some roots.

Young enuff to start over and still put a good twenty in.

Good thing is; I gots me an interview next week. Already!

I am an engineer and experienced my first layoff after 25 years on January 31. We were notified in the beginning of November so that put an edge on the holidays. It definitely frosted my wheaties but I managed to get a job when I wasn't even looking for one. It really came to me out of the blue with basically the same pay and benefits. Luckily, I was able to take February off and made it to NYC for Superbowl, Tecopa Hot Springs, Death Valley, and Frisco.

Keep your spirits up because opportunities often come from the craziest places.

Having just gone thru a period of hell in the job market, "I feel your pain". Lost my job of tem years when the economy started to go sour. took the first job that came along and was miserable. Last year at this time I was handing in my resignation. Spent the summer doing landscape work and interviewed and waited until the right job came along.(Very important as i did not want to make the same mistake) Times were very lean and the bill collectors were at the gates but lawn mowing made enough to keep them at bay.
I was offered a job with a company that builds boats. They needed someone in the purchasing dept who knew how to do shipping and recieving. I took it and was not unhappy with the job. On Feb 1st the COO called me into his office and offered me the Job as the Safety/Enviro manager as well as the Transportation manager. (Transportation means i ship the compleated boats to their new homes) I am very happy. I guess the point to this is to look carefully and don't take the first thing that comes along. Do take an interum job if you need to. and Good Luck.

at 50, i'm finally doing what i wanted to do since the first year out of the navy. i'm not the best but i try hard and have a great attitude about what i'm doing. the money isn't bad although it could be a little better for the job market. i figure that will come with some more experience. everything happens for a reason, you just have to figure out what that reason is and follow your first instinct.

I can't get laid off!

I'm "self employed."

That's another way of saying "constantly looking for work"

Dave,

I'll check the internal board at the day job tomorrow. In the mean time look at jobing.com as they seem to be making an effort in the Milwaukee area currently.

Sorry, they had a purchasing gig posted a month or so ago, I guess they filled it with one of the new people down at the other end of the building.

...happened to my dad this past year; my mother and I finally convinced him to go into custom woodworking, which he's wanted to do for ages.

Sometimes it's just the motivation that's needed to start doing something you truly love.

Dave, I'll give you a job in purchasing here in France, only catch is you got to bring your own money.

Seriously though, best of luck with it.

I'm just glad I'm in an industry that constantly needs experienced people. No shortage of jobs for truck drivers.
