The dealer is expecting my 08 Uly xt this week, and I am having it set up for long distance riding. My question and concerns are: I want the motor to perform its best on all rpm levels, but, I do not want an obnoxious loud exhaust, I have ridden HD's for decades, I like to hear em', but, not end up with a head ache. I am planning on a drummer exhaust , ecm work, and K&N air filter. Is the drummer sound reasonable or a bit too much. This is a matter of taste, I know, but, there must be a balance there. I have heard a drummer and I have to admit that I didn't like it. So far, the best sounding pipe that I have heard on a XB is the Buell race muffler. It sounded "just right" to me. | ||

I ride long distance frequently on my Uly. I left the exhaust stock for that reason. Don't forget the tail pipes end in front of the rear tire, so there is a bit of sound coming up from the road, whereas with the Harley the pipes likely ended behind you. I had the Race Kit on my former City-X and it sounded great. But on the longer rides it got a little annoying. For less than .02....that's what I got. | ||

I had the race kit exhaust on my XB, while pleasing around town, on long rides it got a bit load. If I was to do again I would have left the stock exhaust on the bike. Etennuly has a good point with the locations exhaust tips. | ||

I have the Buell race kit on my Uly and if I had to do it over again, I would just stay with the stock pipe. I only changed it because it was rusting. I should have had it ceramic coated. | ||

I have the Drummer on an otherwise stock 06 Uly. It is loud. The first thing I noticed about it - well, the second thing, was the improved response at low RPMs. No surging, very smooth, very predictable. Before this I always thought the loud pipes save lives thing was total BS - but the number of close calls and lane encroachments by unobservant cages went down dramatically after the Drummer. Plus - no matter what the exhaust I wear earplugs, especially on long rides. The drummer's not for everybody, but I've never regretted it. There were two unexpected pleasures I experienced with the Drummer. The first is really pissing off the yuppies in their luxury cars who can't hear when they try to talk on their cell phones when I'm next to them. The second is setting off a whole line of car alarms when I roll through the parking lots and parking garages at low speeds and low rpms. I know - simple mind, simple pleasures  | ||

The Standard Drummer gives me that old-timey righteous sound in spades. But noisy? No way. Now if you are paranoid about the granny down the street who sits at her window with the phone in her lap waiting for you to walk out the door with your helmet, well yeah there's no hope for you. But if we're talking real world noise problems, my neighbor is a shift worker and the first time I fired 'er up, it was under his window. I sleep days and work nights too and as soon as I heard it, I knew we were still cool with each other. All that's needed is a butter-smooth idle, that's the noise trick. No need to ever blip the throttle to keep the bike alive. Just give it a minute to warm, then quietly burble out of the sleepy hood. (Message edited by kurosawa on March 10, 2008) | ||

Special ops I tried the Special ops and found it to be too loud for my taste. I think that the Drummer is supposed to be a bit quieter, but I dont know how much. | ||

I have a Buell race muffler on my S2 now. (I know...apples and oranges) However, I used to have a Supertrapp external disc. No matter what I did with that 'trapp, I couldn't keep it out of my helmet when I was on a long trip. Now I can run an iPod at moderate, just-enough-to-hear levels, still hear cars rolling up beside me on the highway, and my ears don't ring after a 3 hour ride. For an XB, I also love the discontinued Buell race pipe. We've got a used 9R here now with it, and it's just musical to me. Although I did hear Bearly's Uly with the full Micron system on it. WOW. Loud, but so schweet.... I'm afraid all I can suggest is ride a couple with different mufflers on them whenever you can. The 08s have a really good fuel map in them so the low-rpm behavior is less of an issue now; ride it stock for a while during your 'sample period' and see if you even need to change it out. Aside from the aural satisfaction, I'd be surprised if you notice anything missing with the stocker. (Message edited by ratbuell on March 10, 2008) | ||

Thanks for the input, it is wed. and still waiting for my new bride to arrive, I think I will ride with the stock ex.for a while , to test the low end response I am concerned with, if it feels good, it stays, if I want better perfomance at lower rpm's, then I will try the drummer. | ||

I just installed A standard Drummer yesterday, With A K&N air filter, stock ECM. Am I going to have any problems with the stock ECM running to lean or any other problems? By the way the Drummer sounds kick a A$$ And it seams to be running as good probably even better than before, Although I just wanted it for the sound because the bike was running plenty good for me like it was before. I just didn't like the sound I do now! The bike is A 2007 ULY. 10000 Miles on it.  |
