this is Unibear looking out over the Pacific Ocean, from our vantage point high above on the lonesome little road that goes thru Fort Hunter Ligget. Glenn and me 'n D were taking the "back" way to Laguna Seca.

> eastern Kansas

That clearly can't be KS because I can see a slight elevation change in the road. ; )

Sanchez, that was indeed Kansas, hard as it is to believe. : )

the following shot is in Kansas, too, and was taken simply because i was so shocked at what i saw:

it was a beautiful set of two curves, one to the right and then quickly another to the left to get you pointed due west again, and then gone, vanished like a fart in the wind (sorry, wanted to sneak in a "Shawshank Redemption" line there...), nary another corner to be seen.

it was so bizarre, i had to stop and take a photo. : )

ps to Sanchez: eastern Kansas is actually quite lovely.

western Kansas, on the other hand, is actually quite not.

to all: the following photos taken at the Fairmount, Indiana town cemetery may be stretching the rules a bit, but there is a road, and, depending on one's outlook on life (and death), this road could be considered very lonesome.

this is JB2's Victory, and the blinding ball of light is coming from my Harley:

it was getting dark, too dark to see, so i'd pulled my bike around and snapped on all the lights:

and this is why we were here:

now that you know the reason for our visit to this quiet, lonely cemetary, take another look at the first pic. is the bright ball of light actually a representation of James Dean's spirit hovering above his headstone?

you were too fast to live, too young to die, bye-bye.

ride in peace.

Lovely pictures!

Now the hi-jack:

Jerry - Stuart says hi back. He is presently breaking in an 1125R right now and said it is the first time he has really scared himself on a bike. He said he wants to make one of the rides you mentioned.

My lonely road trip to Badwater. It was cold and windy.

So many choices.

Some really great pictures on this post and thanks to Micah(Slowride) for starting this thread. Some of the loneliest highways in the nation are here in Utah and posted below (sorry about the image quality, analog camera quite a while ago) is my idea of a really lonely part that I experienced right here.

At speed on the Bonneville Salt Flats its pretty lonely with just you, your machine, a few mile marker pennants and floating island in the distance. Most sound is behind you and you can hear every part of the motor. I swear I heard the tach cable spinning. Concentrating on the run, but peaceful and a total adrenalin rush at the same time.

Finally after just a few minutes you see the five mile marker, hit the kill switch, start slowing down and begin a long slow turn off the course to your chase vehicle and the trip back to the pits, friends and another successful run. Its addicting and I have been back many times but not to run (not race), remember its speed trials.

Memory lane, lonesome highway, for sure as anybody who has run there can attest. Just though I'd share that with you. Maybe I'll go back with my 1125R some day to run but I'll be there again this year to enjoy it anyways. Bob

Mike, it was 1985. I ran '84 & '85. Made 150 and change and I thought I was going really fast. Not too bad though for a turbocharged 2 valve, pushrod boxer. Could have gone faster, I had the H.P. but ran out of gear at 8500 rpm. I did not want to blow the engine. I could best that today with my new bike stock. Bob

The picture was taken from Dantes View which is a 13 mile spur from the highway that leads to Furnace Creek from highway 127. The view looks down to Badwater.

Did you ride through Burkes Garden on to 42. I was wondering if 623 to Ceres is paved or gravel. I was in Marion for a couple days riding but was told by a local that 623 was gravel.
Thanks Joe

Bad_karma - I came in on 623. It's less than paved on the southern half. : )

It was dry when I rode it the fist time. Then I ended up taking the guys in the picture over it (including Ferris & D on the Road King) and it was wet and icy. They were all good sports and didn't kick my ass at the other end.
