We had a brutile winter here in Wisconsin and now we're seeing potholes so big they're wiping out entire truck front ends. My question for people from the cold states is this....Do you soften up your suspension for spring streets or let it go as is? If you soften, what sort of adjustments do make?

The potholes are a game in Ohio. We just use'em to keep our reflexes sharp. If you can dodge a pothole following a car at a distance of 5 seconds AND do it at 80mph, you can dodge anything...

The roads are really horrible up north, that's for sure. The ice really tears them up.

Here in the South, the biggest problems with the roads is apparently who ever the DOT contracts to maintain them. I was driving in downtown Atlanta once and one of the headers in my car was almost ripped off by a manhole cover sticking up out of the road. It would have thrown a bike down for sure.

Especially if you end up with a "nut-stacker"

I was riding the alley way behind some stores yesterday to keep out of traffic.
It's one that goes in kind of steps, as I went over the last "step" I goosed it a little to ride a wheelie down it. Bad idea, I came down hard into a nut-stacker. On the bright side...no one saw me

I'm surprised I still have my left testicle. It took the brunt every time I received a nut-stacker when I was riding dirtbikes... and I almost lost it in some bad bets a few times.

I don't have any children, though. I hope my boys are okay...

The pot holes in the road in Ohio are managable... they usually fix them pretty quickly.

The "killers" are on the shoulders, where people are not supposed to drive, but always do. For example to sneak by and make a right turn. Kind of an Ad-Hoc right turn lane.

You can see what looks like a fairly innocent puddle, about a foot or two across. Problem is, it is also a foot (or two) deep. Pretty entertaining to watch people who are all mad at you because you won't drive or ride on the unmarked shoulder go around you in a huff... only to discover why you are not driving or riding on the unmarked shoulder.

Splash - Crunch - Draggggggggg!

But like I said, I seek them out when I am on the KLR, I can get some decent air! I'll show you a sport utility vehicle! : )

In New York City if the pothole isn't registered with the city then it isn't really a pothole. NYC has the worlds best potholes.

yens haven't seen potholes till you've been to PA. potholes are so big up there that some people use them for fishing holes. the roads look as bad a week after they repave them as they did to begin with.

potholes are a way of life out here in California. The roads are completely f*cked.

Lesson: legalize marijuana, lose your federal highway funding.

On a recent trip the roads were cut with flooding for several days. After they opened back up they were full of potholes & washouts.
The worst ones are the submerged ones.
When they have water in them you have no idea if its a pothole full of water of just some water on the road.
A couple hours out from home I was overtaking a car & when past it & crossing back over to the right side of the road I see a massive pothole from hell right in front of me.
It was too late to change lines & at the "speed I was going" I knew it was not going to be good.
I stood up on the pegs & hung on while the bike & myself were flung around all over the place
I rode it out fairly well
But at the next fuel stop I saw the back wheel had slammed up into my number plate buckling it & the bracket

My brother came through Northern Kentucky last week in his new one ton, 4 door, 4X4 Dodge Dually on the interstate. It has been in the shop all week trying to find out which bearing race broke, or what axle housing bent.

He said at 75 mph it went into the hole, up into the air, and landed on the concrete that had broken out of the hole. With traffic all around him he couldn't miss it.
