I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 that the rear end is making a some noise(a lot). I have done a little research and it seams to be a common problem. Has anyone else had this issue and did you get it fixed with the 7/70 warranty?

as long as it's not the brakes it should be. i had a late 90's ram several years ago and the bearing took a dump. me and a friend fixed it due to it being out of warranty. if it is the bearings in your case it should be covered.

My 2003 Dodge Ram is a 2500 4x4. No noise in the rear yet. How many miles you got?

A friend of mine has a Dodge Dakota and he's gone through 2 rear ends. Although he has about 180,000 miles on the clock.

My '97 had a rear end that started to whine a bit, but then it turned into a bit of a 'howl' - I traded it in on my new one. Fortunately they didn't drive it when they offered me the trade-in amount!

It sounded like tire whine at first.

It had 170,000+ when that started happening, along with several other expensive-to-fix stuff.

Those guys will help you out... Don't wait as far as your warranty..

The Auto is notorious for going bad... I spoke to a guy at the dealer waiting on my recall being done..His ram was getting its second tranny...

I have a 06 1500 6 speed 4X4 love it.. Except when I fill the tank, going on a hundred bucks to fill the darn truck..

No call? Damn... Anyway, the transmissions are notorious for going out. The rear diffs aren't super prone to failure, they're Dana 44s (I think).

Hey Thump, is there a Dodge dealer you would recommend in C-bus?

If you have the 7/70, don't touch a thing. Dodge will cover just about anything on the drivetrain as long as you don't muck around with it.
Without hearing it myself it could be a few things. Like a U-joint or if you have a rear diff locker, that could have gone bad, or if you have ever submerged the rear-end, i.e. putting a boat in the water. That can screw up the rear-end as well.
Not sure if that helps, but if you have the warranty, use it!

Also as a side note. The tranny stories you here are mostly from people who over-tow in overdrive, and from people not doing he routine maintenance.

I agree your 7/70 should cover it (used to be asst. service manager for a Jeep dealer, still Chrysler). We saw quite a few howlers in the ZJ body Grand Cherokees, and never had an issue getting a replacement unit for a customer. Depending on miles or possible time constraints, they'd either have us rebuild what was in the vehicle or send us a whole brake-to-brake axle assembly.

Make sure you clean all the bits of burnout rubber out of the wheelwells before you take the truck in, LOL.

Also be sure to keep up on your maintenance schedule. Keep limited slip fluid in the diff if you have limited slip (aka "posi"), and make sure to use synthetic if the manual calls for it. Our '05 2500 4x4 runs synthetic gear oil at both ends. It also has boost, EGT and trans temp gauges in the cab so I can keep from cooking things I don't want cooked : )

Ehh... Cleaning the rubber off would make life easy, but check out the Magnuson-Moss Act.

Does it make more noise when accelerating? Coasting? Cruising at a steady speed? When turning? Did it come on suddenly or has it built up to it?

It makes noise when you put it in gear (big clunk)
It is leaking fluid.
It seams to make noise when I hit bumps.

If it is leaking at the front yoke it sounds like the pinion bearings are pooping out. Warranty should cover that.

Get it to Dodge, I've had good experiences with Caldwell. With the exception of the fluid loss, I'd suspect a u-joint.

I'm pretty sure the 7/70 covers the driveshaft as well as seals and gaskets. You can download a copy of the warranty on Dodge's website

OK, I just called Thumpers favorite. Trader Buds.
I drop it off on Monday.

The whole deal just pisses me off and my blood pressure is going up just thinking about it.

U-joints will cost you about 100 bucks per driveshaft to replace. they can be done pretty easily if you have a stout enough press. If they get bad enough they can cause a leak due to vibrations on the pinions seal. have you crawled under the truck? If not get under there and wiggle the driveshaft, that'll tell you a lot. If u-joints are bad, which the clunk is indicating they'll be rattling around a bit. You could also jack the truck up and put it nuetral and roll the tires, which will also tell you alot. I'm not sure if warranties cover u-joints even though 50,000 is pretty quick for them to go. I just replaced mine in my truck which has ~110,000 on it...

I dont have any experence with 1/2 tons. I twist them out pretty regular in my 1 ton dooley(cummins)pulling large tractors on goose neck trailors. Takes about 20 min. to replace them with new ones from advance auto parts ($15.00 each)

wolfie might have trouble getting them out due to salt, I can't use my vice to get any of mine out, but like cowboy stated it ain't much to do on your own-specially if you have a good press. Hell if the pig is going you could throw a new rear end under there for pretty damn cheap too-depending on how comfy you are with that stuff.

Ceejay, I just said the SAME thing on the phone...

Wolf, if it's u-joints and not covered under warranty, let me know.

My first job outta highschool was a chassis fab/driveshaft shop in Cleveland
