I am curious about the assembly on top of the handlebar bracket . . .what's it for?

I am looking for a upgrade front end (inverted forks) for a friend's 2002 M2L.

It'll fit, that "mystery part" is a combo handle bar clamp/dashboard mount for the S1/X1/M2.

Is that shiny place road rash? They look very similar to my X1. I can't recall if that is where the dash mounts to or not, that would make sense.
It still has better than five days so if no one has a positive identification before, I'll pull the covers back tonight and check for ya'.

Cool, now we know.
Wasn't questioning your post Spidey. I must have been typing while you were posting. It took me a while as I kept trying to scope out the "rash".

The 'shiny' spot looks like white crap left from a parking or emissions sticker.

+1 on the inspection sticker goo theory. You'd have to try real hard to get localized rash right there, and nowhere else...
