I did a little "Free Translator" work online, and found that the weekend tours DO include lodging.

I emailed them with a tonne of questions. (See, I converting to European as we speak!)

Alright, now I found more info. I was getting pretty excited too... buuuut, their 300 euro weekend tour is abuot 350 km. Here's my loop on the left, their loop on the right.

I know my loop looks LONG. But the straighter parts in Germany are all on freeways, and the travel time from E-B and D-E are both less than 5 hours.

That is very odd. But I think it's a typo.

I don't think so. 34 PS is the entry level motorbike class, newcomers are allowed this one only for the first two years and the cheaper bike got restricted to fit that. It's pretty usual here. The second listed ER-6 is 72 PS (IIRC), which seems the standard power to me.

Driving with a bike (especially the restricted one) on the freeways is a PITA, I can tell you that. The right lane is stuck with trucks (limited to 50 mph) and on the left lanes you will be outlawed. August is high season also, so you will find even more nuts driving around as usual.

Regards,
Gunter

MAN! That SUCKS!

So, kind of off topic, but how do they restrict a motor that much without it running like crap?

They do actually run like crap :-)

As you mentionend driving time above: Frankfurt-Munich is about a 4-5 hours highway ride, if you observe the rules, no breaks included. As a rule of thumb the average speed is about 70 mph at highways and about half of that outside of them. That's good enough to do some calculations and you're on the save side most of the time.

Gunter

Mike, if this is a "once in a lifetime" thing for you. Don't scrimp on it, do it as best as you can.

The 34 horse limit is (theoretically) to stop novice riders killing themselves, but you'd hate it, & it wouldn't be any fun going up Stelvio on it either.

As Gunter says for the autobahn, you wan't something that will keep up.

Not sure how it works in Germany but in France & the UK a lot of the smaller dealers & traders will rent out their trade-in stock, & as they're used bikes the rates are much more reasonable.

I have looked at that website, but to get the mileage I want for my 2-3 day ride, I'd have to rent the thing for a week!

Arg.

I will! Most of them say "email me 10 days ahead of time". So I probably won't know much about that until I'm over there.

The motorcycle trip is getting more and more difficult. Including getting to the renting dealership, I'm closing in on a grand, and sadly, that is just not doable.

I will keep my eyes open through.

The Buell dealership that does weekend rides never contacted me back. Maybe I scared them off with my million questions, in english.

Hmmmm...

OR

We were planning on spending a few days in southern germany already, in the car.

I could split from my buddies before they head back north, and pickup a rental in Munich. This way, I'd only need to pay to take the train one way...

My original website has a BMW F650 for 105 Euro per day, or (I'd prefer) F800 for 120.

Renting two days would still give me 600km (much less than I wanted), but I could still do a trip like this:

Lets see
Renting 2 days = $360
Helmet 2 days = $24
Train 1 way = $90
Total = $474

Less than $500, THAT is doable!

Hmmmmm

When do you want to come over here?

BTW: your calculation is missing any fuel :-) Consider at least a triple of cost you would pay at home.

Gunter

I know I left fuel out, I'm willing to pay whatever for fuel, as long as everything else works out.

Flying over July 8th, coming back the 24th.
