Going back to the sandbox soon. Last time I took a cheap $99 Kodak digital camera. It did OK for the long shots but close-ups sucked.

Looking for a recommendation for a replacement - like to keep it under $200, a slim profile would be nice too. I'm guessing there probably won't be a great deal of difference in any of the various models in that price range - but just thought I'd ask

Thanks

Don

I've been looking for over a month now.

All signs point to one!

CANON SD1000

Rated the best ultra-compact digital camera, and it's affordable too! $169 just about everywhere! (Walmart, amazon.com)

As much as I wanted a higher Megapixel camera, every review says this camera's picture quality is the best of any compact camera!

Good Deals can be had on the Nikon D50 DSLR.

I found a body on Craigslist here in DFW for $200. A good kit lens (18mm-55mm) will set you back around $100. A SD card is going for about $14.99 for 2gb at Fry's or Micro Center.

This setup would give you the best bang for $$$.
Plus, you might even get noticed by submitting your stuff to Stars & Stripes and pick up a new "B" Billet. If your sandbox time has to due with the US Military.

Just my thoughts...

Used or refurb Fuji F-10. Shoots at 1600 ASA for low light work, nice and portable, runs forever on batteries.

For a little more, the Fuji F30 / F31FD will go to 3200 ASA. I don't think that will get you under $200 though...

Canon SD720 is a little larger than the SD1000, but it takes AA's and has better zoom range. Still under $200.

+1 on the Fujis.

F10, F30, or F40FD. Steer clear of the F50.

Fuji F40fd review:

$149.95 after $50 rebate from B&H

By far the best bang for the buck currently.

I am looking at my Nikon COOLPIX 5900 right now. It is a 5.1 megapixel camera with a 3X zoom. I got it as a gift before my last deployment.

It had the crap beat out of it for the entire year and still works perfectly even though it looks totally beat up. I have a 2G card in it now. It even takes pretty good video for a camera. The rechargeable battery was nice. I just put the cord and charger in the bottom of my pack and took it wherever we went. The battery would go for a week long mission if you didn't do a ton of playback. It would plug right into US military base power without a converter too. I did convoy escort security duty so it had to deal with a ton (50,000 miles) of heat, vibration, and a few IEDs.

I don't know if it is still made, but at least from my experience it's a great camera.

Bill

Sorry... I got caught in a snowstorm on the bike and didn't get home till midnight with the help of some cool guys.

I'll get that model for you tonight

I personally have a Fuji Finepix s700 for sale with all the original documents, box, software and a 2 gig SD card for $175. It's not compact, it's the size of an average 35mm point and shoot, but it does it all pretty well.

I'd go for either a Fuji, or a Cannon if you wanted something that was compact. Most of these "light weight" camera's take horrible up close photos because they pick up any sort of shaking in your hands. Most of the Cannon's and Fuji's I've handled do not have these problems.... some of the worst for it are the slim line Sony cameras. It might be worth checking into one that has a stabilization feature on it if you've got the shakes.
