I AM LOOKING FOR AN INEXPENSIVE OPEN TRAILER FOR MY HUSBAND'S LIGHTNING XB9S. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GOOD TRAILER. IT'S FOR HIS BIRTHDAY AND I DON'T WANT TO ASK HIM ABOUT IT.

Hello Christy!

Before we begin, you better define "inexpensive". Just state what you are willing to spend as an upper limit. Also, do you have space to park a trailer, or will you want to store it standing upright against a garage wall to save space?

Then check back and I'll bet several folks will have suggestions for you. If your successful in your search, please call my wife and tell her to buy me motorcycle toys or else I may elope with you, because you know how to treat your man.

Christy,

Nice gesture for sure. If it were me, I’d simply give him the money along with a nice card (or whatever). Nothing worse than getting something expensive/useful like a motorcycle trailer and have it not meet his needs or future wants. Who knows, maybe he’d like to put a little more money with your gift and get something other than what you decide upon. Then again, maybe he has a friend or acquaintance that has something for sale you know nothing about.

TO EXPAND ON MY SEARCH FOR A TRAILER FOR MY HUSBAND'S XB9S:I REALLY DON'T WANT TO SPEND MORE THAN $400 AND IT WOULD BE NICE IF IT COULD STAND UPRIGHT IN THE GARAGE. I AM ALSO PLANNING TO GET HELP FROM MY FATHER-IN-LAW (WHO RIDES). IF I CAN'T DECIDE I MIGHT TAKE THE SUGGESTION TO GIVE HIM THE MONEY AND LET HIM BUY IT. BUT I STILL WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS ON THIS.

$400??
Good luck. The Kendon standup trailers retail for over $1500. I havent seen a used one go for less than $900. Are there any other standup trailers out there?

Give him the cash.

Christy...Great idea for a gift. Almost any trailer can be modified to stand up by a welder so don't let that hold you back. Perhaps your Father-in-Law and his friends can help you locate a used trailer in the local classifieds that will be both affordable and provide for "expansion."

You should easily be able to find a 8' flat bed trailer for $400 or less. Then you can have any semi-competent metal shop weld brackets into for a single or pair of bikes. All you really need is a 120 degree bent bracket to lodge the front wheel in and some strategically placed eye bolts sunk into the frame. Blammo, instant bike trailer.

I'd kill for one of those Kendons, though...I'm getting sick of needing two poeple to load a bike into the back of my truck...

Christy,

In what part of the world are you located? I found an 8'x10' (approx) trailer with a fold-down ramp and sides for $500. It's located just outside of Green Bay, WI.

I got my first trailer at Lowes. 4x8, cost around $450. Slapped a piece of marine grade plywood on the bottom and a chock in the front. I had to add a few eyebolts for tiedowns, and was good to go. I put probably 4000 miles on it, now another friend is toting it across the country. Best part about a flat trailer is that you can pack a ton of stuff on it other than a bike (or along with it). Another guy I know got a little one off eBay, I think around $300. It was small, but worked.

One thing to ask is how far and how fast is the trailer going to be towed. The farther and faster it will be towed the larger the tires it would need. The little do-nut tires are fine for dragging a boat down to the marina, or for taking a bike to a track within 100 miles. Around here there are lots of snowmobile trailers around with the little tires on them. Years ago we used to make dirt-bike trailers out of old boat trailers. I was just at a trailer yard near me and in addition to new trailers they had a couple of older utility trailers, 4'x6' beds, both have steel sides, one had a heavier new axle and 15" rims for $200, the other had 12"or13" rims and a lighter axle and was $150. I think I'm getting a used pickup instead (found one last night).

$400 should get something serviceable on the used market, and something locally usefull at the local large chain-hardware store (Ace, True-Value, Menards, Home Depot, etc....).

I bought a 4X8 trailer from Home Depot about 4 years ago for under $400. I use it all the time for track days and I am pretty happy with it.

How does Kendon stay in Business since almost everyone out there refuses to pay the high cost of their designs?

A whole lot of people do buy Kendon's stuff. Did you ever sell your's that you had posted in the classifieds awhile back?

Thank you for all the info on trailers. It sounds like there is a lot to consider when buying a trailer-I didn't realize that! I think I will wait and let him buy his own trailer so that he gets exactly what he wants. Thanks a lot, I am surprised by the response, no wonder my husband is addicted to the Bad Weather Bikers.
