I was just in Kroger looking @ moto rags (if you know me, thats not the safest place for me to hang-out) I was flipping thru Motorcyclist mag. I spotted a pic of an 08 XB12 power plant.
With a caption (IIRC)
Buell's v-twin push rod air cooled engines are never going to have the power of I4's

The article basically says that a cbr600 and an xb12r have the same(???) hp, but the buell is alot slower than the cbr, because its where in the rpm range it develops it power.

Im not sure they have the same top HP,but the last time I was @ the track I saw a 04 12R stomp a cbr600 in the turns and keep-up and/or pass the cbr600's in the straights. GXSR1000's, well thats another story.

But I'm not a pro.

The Article seems to have a big bias. Its is also unclear and I'm not sure they answered the guys question. I would have explained the why some one would want low end power as a trade off for top end HP. IIRC, this is they same column that claimed the ZTL was worthless gimmick. Wow they are on a real roll with the Buell bashing.

EVERYBODY has a bias.

Having ridden each - I'd be willing to bet that STOCK and properly setup, the CBR may well be quicker around a racetrack.

Thing is, they have pretty similar max power (with a little more going to the CBR). They WAY the power is delivered is different so yeah, if he rides the XB the same way as the CBR, it "won't pull."

It's an old argument since in BOTH racing and on the street, the two bikes are aimed at totally different types of riders and on the track, they're hardly ever run in the same class.

Apples and oranges... and like I said, it's an old argument.

I know people who like ballgames. Some like watching golf, some like watching basketball, some like Aussie rules football. Which is better?

What is meant by "slower" is the real question. If you are talking about top speed then I would agree the 600 will be faster than the XB especially when you can crank the 600s up above 15,000 rpms nowadays.

I agree its an old fight, that boils down to prefs, but it really seems they are on Buell's case lately.

IMHO, The guy could have answered it better. Not necessarily promoting Buells.

All those sports require one ball (one at a time at least with golf, it may require many) but my sport of choice, sportbikes, takes both balls.

Some of the folks I ride with here ride 600 and liter bikes. They are much faster in the straights. It's fine.

In the turns I have two advantages, I can carry corner speed, and I can drive out of the turn harder.

Their comment was that they couldn't believe how easily the Buells dove into corners and how well they catapulted out the other side.

I wouldn't get too bent out of shape Matt. When you are "different in every sense" many just won't appreciate it.

I lot of 'journalists' are ex-racers.

If such are at the press days I stand two of them on top of each other, look the top one in the eye and point out why I have no interest in a 600.

And you don't have to dress like a Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger to ride 'em.

Ever since it was established by the motorcycling press that XB's carry high corner speed, it seems many Buellers use this to support their argument that an XB12 could compete with a CBR600. On a go-kart track yes, and that's where the XB story pretty much ends.

Put it another way. A CBR600 is a super handling motorcycle. That the Buell has heaps of praise piled upon it for great handling and the highest cornering speeds, doesn't make the CBR600 just a fast IL4 600. It is so much more. It is also a superb handling machine. That's the reality.

Who said that corner speed would be the deciding factor making XBs faster than CB600s?

Who said that CB600s were bad handling bikes?

Where are these statements anywhere in this discussion?

Just two in this thread. Then there's your own comment.......

Nothing like stating the obvious in your first observation. You seem to offer the comment as favourable to the CBR600, only in an effort to have the reader believe your second comment must also be based on fact.

Truth is, a CBR600 would wax an XB12 in and out of a corner if it were any corner other than a tight twisty. Any high speed corner would see the XB's advantage surpassed.

You, like some others, assume because a magazine test favoured the high corner speed of a Buell, and Ducati have made fast corner exit fashionable for V twins, that the XB can claim such lofty merits against a CBR600. That is not the case, and that was my point.

Let's keep it real rather than making out the Buell (again, yawn) is some kind of giant IL4 killer. That way we might enjoy the merits of the Buell and what they really were intended for. Which is not to compete with the best sports bikes Japan can offer.

The XB bikes are street bikes and marketed as such. In that domain they rule over an inline four cylinder six hundred.

Buell's v-twin push rod air cooled engines are never going to have the power of I4's
This is a fact, but, not nessisarily a bad thing either.
On the street I have fun embarassing the I4 crowd, I'm long gone before they spool up, and they have to slow long before I do, also the drive out of a corner is quicker.
Ask the WERA racer that followed me through Wolf Pen. He likes Buell, so he's no hater, buy surprised none the less.
He was on his GSXR750.
The track is another story, but, just as fun, just ain't winning any races against the I4 crowd.
Against the other twins in it's class though, and it's a real good race, rider against rider, rather than bike against bike.
Pushrod V twin = Apple
Inline four cylinder = Orange
Nothing wrong with either, just different.

It's a non-arguement.

Except a CBR600 is also a street bike, and works superbly as one. It's probably the biggest selling IL4 sports bike in the world. It definitely is in the UK. No wonder why.

Not dissing the XB, but you wouldn't pass me anywhere on an XB if I were on a CBR600
