A friend of mine had a close encounter with an SUV making a left hand turn from incoming traffic. Fortunately he bailed at the last moment and is left "unscathed", the whole thing did not make for a comforting evening.
So eerie to think that I had taken the RC51 for a "final" spin just hours before those two last pictures were taken...

Are the forks supposed to give out like that???

So did the bike actually hit the SUV, or was the damage caused by the fall?

The forks on all scooters fail like that when they know a 5,000 Lb cage is about to hit them.

Wad'ya think the guy was pulling a turning wheelie at an intersection an the forks fell apart mid turn and the front fender self destructed. Sheesh, how long have you been riding ? 2 days?

James, thanks for the attitude...

I was only commenting on the fact that the forks fully separated. Most of the accidents I have seen they get mangled badly, but stay connected to the triple trees. Before you say it I already know XB Buells are different (protect the fuel cell)

I still haven't heard if he actually hit the SUV, or what truly happened.

Guess you haven't seen very many crashes or lost any buddies to the infamous excuse"I didn't see him when I turned left"
In 1976 there used to be 4 young friends that rode together all the time,as of last summer I became the sole survivor of the being turned left in front of crowd, hope you have many trouble free miles of riding.

Indeed we are all invisible...
After he jumped off, the bike hit the rear right wheel of the SUV.
But it must have been at an angle, because it only touched the tire/wheel.
It tweaked the axle and blew the tire on the SUV, I think it was a Lexus of sort.
I am sure my friend is very sore right now, but he was fine, his gear did its job very nicely.

Not to be an ass, but I have to ask...

Any idea how fast he was going? It takes a lot of force to blow a tire off the rim and bend an axle... unless it got pinned underneith and truck ran over it or something...

Thats the interesting part...
He was going the speed limit (which on that section of the road was 35mph)
But judging by the type of damage sustained
It looks like the the front end must have gotten wedged under the wheel, absorbing most of the impact. There is very little damage elsewhere on the bike (aside from some minor road rash).
So the front end took the entire impact, and hence shattered...
Luckily he has a witness, whom almost attacked the guy in the SUV for trying to claim that my friend ran a red light...

From the look of it, the bike had no headlight. Is that true? I don't see one in the before pic, but I don't know if I’m just looking in the wrong spot.

It certainly good to still have him around, that was too close...

That bike does have a headlight, it is inside the ram-air intake. I am actually surprised how well it worked.
The reason its there is because its a track bike, and when required just one bolt needs to be removed to get it out of there.

the old service manager at the dealer i've gone to had some old lady pull out in front of him and when the cops got there and gave her a ticket she wanted to know why he didn't get a ticket. they told her why and she said "but he's riding the motorcycle"

He was wearing:
-A Spidi textile jacket with a Knox back protector, and Dianese hard armor.
-Alpinestars Riding boots.
-Jeans with ICON "field armor" knee and shin guards.
-"Kevlar" leather full gauntlet gloves. (atleast I think Kevlar is the brand)
-Suomi helmet
The jacket took sustained the most damage but it stayed together long enough to keep the armor in place, leaving him without a scratch.

I too have noticed that drivers tend to think that the motorcyclist is always guilty...
I can see why that may be an assumption though;
there are a lot of people riding much to fast in the wrong places without much gear.
