Got this in the mail the other day
Clocked at 48 mph in a 35 mph zone
Caught by an unmanned radar/camera set-up

$40, no points, can't be used to raise your insurance premiums

when i think of all the times i have exceeded the posted limit and the fact that the last speeding ticket i got was in 1983 - i guess that's not too bad of a record

now that i know where it is, i'm seriously thinking about going through there again on one wheel. i just need to work on my skills a bit more

The next time I get to Maryland, Im going to find you so we can both ride one across there. Just keep the front wheel high enough so they can't get the plates:P

Yeah, for those of you guys using GPS, we oughta set up a topic for Lat/Long of photo radar equipment. The intersection cameras are all the rage here in Texas now (at least in our major cities). If you are anywhere in the intersection when the light turns red, you get a little ticket in the mail when you least expect it.

I think the small towns are right behind them though because you can't roll through the littlest spot in the road with only one traffic light-equipped intersection in the whole place without seeing cameras covering the intersection nowadays.

You need some mud on the license plate.

After looking that the pic posted above, I wonder if they'd even be able to read my plate from that angle because I've got it mounted flat against the undertray. I'm pretty sure the intersection cameras around here won't pick up my plate because they're way up in the air with the traffic lights.

The local LEOs haven't said anything about it though, and I'm quite sure they check me out every time I roll through town. It's a little college town in the suburbs, so flamboyantly loud "funny sounding" crotch rockets get a lot of attention because they keep a pretty short leash on students acting a fool around town. I had this one guy with the university PD pull me over once and he just couldn't understand why my bike didn't sound like the normal crotch rocket. It was tough to keep a straight face when I had to patiently explain to him the difference between 2 and 4 cylinder engines. It really seemed to bother him that mine wasn't like what he was used to pulling over. Apparently he grew up in a cave in deep East Texas. Bless his heart. I skated with a warning and then accidentally floated the front wheel through first on the way back into traffic.

There used to be a website, ProjectEZP, that contained GPS coordinates of every known speed trap in the country. However, it appears as though it has been taken down, as surfing into http://projectezp.com now takes you into a generic blogging page with no information whatsoever. I can't find any information on what happened to that page, either. Anyone know?

Yep

Here's the kicker. When you get the ticket it actually gives you an official Montgomery County, Maryland local government webpage where they list the locations. Who knew?

http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/content/pol/ask/ speed/locations.asp

I was just out on a wandering joy ride and took a turn down some roads I had never been on before. Even when I saw the picture I couldn't really tell where I was at the time. Inarguably I was on Dufief Road, near Rockville, MD

So I guess now besides being hyperalert for traffic and other potential risks while out riding I have to look UP periodically as well. Or maintain a legal speed at all times. That ones not likely.

I'm not sure if there are stripes on the road for all the "Safe Speed" speedtraps but I will know soon.

There is a way to beat those cameras. Its a spray on that goes over the plate. I obscures the image to a camera but when looked at it does not. I've seen it in the back of a few magazines like Cycleworld and Motorcyclist. I'll do some hunting and get back to you.

It would be very interesting to hear the local would save money by using speed trap camera rather than LEO falling asleep. As if someone borrowed your bike or car and sped to get caught on the camera. So.... whose fault? The owners...... Hard to argue with "Not me!"

you can actually check a box that states someone else was operating your vehicle (but you have to say who) or that the vehicle was stolen

i started thinking and thought you could, theoretically, you had it for sale, someone took it for a test drive, you held his license but don't remember the name, etc

then i thought how low would i have to sink for that to happen
i was speeding, i caught caught, the $ is minimal with no points, no insurance implications

HTFU !

I don't agree with camera deal... I think it reeks too much of big brother!!!

But something has to be done, especially with the growing number of idiots that choose to flee from the Law...

$40 is pretty cheap. No insurance points, either. Could be a lot worse, you know.

You should check out many German cities now with camera boxes at many intersections. But many of them have no camera in them. The actual cameras are moved around from time to time!

Don that sucks. Another fine job of tax collection. I'm glad they have found a new way to curb crime, NOT! Come to my state and we will add up to $2500 a year for three years for the horrendous crime you committed against the peoples republic of america.

Bad_karma - Yes, I've heard about the craziness in Virginia. The brunt of the fines don't hit you until you go to re-register the vehicle, correct? Still, I've heard the law enforcement agencies are pretty tough on bikes - make stops for the smallest of infractions like license plate lights, etc, and that virtually any aftermarket add-on can be construed as a violation. Come on over to Maryland anytime

No effect on insurance would be the factor that would make it acceptable, I guess. Crap, in California it would be a $200 ticket and it would be a point on your record, guaranteed.

Thanks for the invite but I have added Maryland to the list of states to avoid, right behind Virginia. Down here they have even shoot riders after a chase, so think hard before you ride here.

Speed cameras have nothing to do with slowing traffic and everything to do with raising revenue.

If they REALLY wanted to slow the traffic down, they'd put a patrol car on the side of the road in PLAIN SIGHT.
