The threashold of objects it would have to avoid would be much higher. It can ignore obstacles the other vehicles have to navigate around. Then again, the idea of the Darpa challange IS actually to demonstate the ability to drive around those obstacles - so it's sorta like cheating to give the thing 14 inches of suspension travel, etc.... The goal of the darpa challange is to come up with a computer system that can be reto fitted into the existing vehicle fleet that can drive a cargo truck over unimproved local roadways so you don't have to waste a trained soilder on every fuel tanker or supply truck, or put a civilian contractor in harms way. That thing if unmanned is more of a terrestrial cruise missle.
