Apparently he feels he cant drive 65. 101 was what he was caught doing on US 71. "I got caught, its not a big deal to me." "You got to abide by the rules, I made a mistake and I'll live with it." Now if it were you or me on a bike, do you think it would have been all that easy? I know speaking for myself that I'm no law-abiding citizen when that old torque demon gets a hold of me. I've seen the better parts of my speedo/tach. I get the feeling I wouldnt have faired that well. Oh yeah, he was ticketed. Didnt say what kind of car he was in. Anyone know?

If it were me, caught going over 100mph, I'd be thrown in jail. Guaranteed.

I have always heard of people being thrown in jail and vehicles impounded but I don't know of any first hand. Probably another urban legend.

Probably another urban legend.

I can confirm, with 100% certainty, that in Catawba County NC 112MPH will get the vehicle impounded and you'll being needing some bail money.

Sounds like first hand knowledge
Did they go through the whole felony stop procedure and make you lay in the dirt?

give him some credit, he wasn't drunk, there were no drugs or guns. it was late at night on a relatively rural stretch of highway. he's just an adrenaline junkie like the rest of us. he does have another hearing in feb.

besides that it's a effin mercedes benz. if i can creep up to 85 without realizing it in my 3.5L dodge magnum i'm sure there is even less sense of speed in a MB that reads 200mph on the dash.

I've been told by a California Highway Patrol Sergeant that the CHP is empowered to jail anyone found exceeding the posted speed limit by MORE than 20mph. ie:21mph and up.

I've not been able to find this in the Vehicle Code, but when you get down to brass tacks, the cops can throw you in jail for no reason at all, in fact, detain you without bail for 71 hours and 59 minutes.

Welcome... to Kalifornia.

Anything in Ohio 20 mph (I think) is considered wreckless op. If the cop wants to, you can be jailed. Incidently I got tagged doing 95 Thursday night...

I say they treat him like anyone else. If he was respectful (he's very approachable in real life) it's very possible they let him go with a ticket. I'd like to know what Benz. My boss is running an SLR and boy is that thing fast.

In some cars 101mph is no big deal. My boss had a complaint from his wife about an odd noise from their new BMW750IL. Made a drum sounding noise above 85. Annoyed the hell out of her for over 1000 miles running down to Chattanooga TN to visit her first granddaughter. Dealer was no help at all as he wouldn't let any of his mechanics try and duplicated the problem on Illinois highways. He and I wer running into Chicago for a meeting and sure enought there was this odd deep thrumming sound above 85. Spent three hours trying to figure out what it was as it wasn't related to speed or gear selection.

I thought it sounded like a wind problem so I got on my portable CB and talke a trucker into speeding a bit more, he was running 80. He picked up the pace to about 90 and we would tuck in and out of his draft zone and sure enought it would go away when we were a few feet off his bumper. We thanked him profusely and both of us slowed back to near speed limit. About a mile later we were pulled over, apparently the IHP listens to CB traffic evening when bored. We spent 45 minutes by the side of the road discussing the Doctors wifes driving habits and I even found the source of the noise under the hood, loose vanity cover on the engine. The officer was gracious enough to not write us a ticket. The stop was so long the Doc got bored and decided to check mpg at various speeds with his new trip computer, we dropped below 15mpg at an indicated 135. I was dozing peacfully in the passenger bucket for our second stop of the night and no you don't get a warning for 70 over. That car was unbelievably comfortable at speed!!

the Doc was in traffic school so often he got to know the regulars and his wife even started baking them cookies, till the feds forced the state to give up that lucrative school in lieu of points scam. God I miss the good old days.

According to the over payed ball player he was doing 101 mph in his "Benzo". When asked how fast does it go, he replied "it says 200 on the dash."

I was out on the local toll road a few years ago on my Ducati 749 Superbike, and I pulled up next to a Mercedes S55 at about 75mph. I was admiring the car, and the passenger was admiring my bike. The driver looked over at me, nodded his head at the road in front of us and I downshifted twice and gave it everything I could, but that AMG left me for dead in a Long Beach second, and I never even got near him. The Duc pegged out at 171mph indicated on the speedo, and I've never gone any faster than that on a bike, nor do I really care to. When I caught up to him at the end of the toll road, we raced from a dead stop and I beat him across the intersection but again he left me far behind...

At the next light he told me that car has in the neighborhood of 550hp and not to be ashamed.

What a jerk.

edit: 100mph is nothing in some cars. I had a 2000 Z06 and 140 was smooth sailing out on the toll roads. Never should have gotten rid of that car...

I will say that man has got some nice taste in vehicles. I was visiting a friend in Cleveland and we hung out with another friend in the same building he lives in. His green BMW had huge rims with low profile tires, tinted windows - even the headrests were embroidered with "King James". This wasn't just an average car, this thing reeked of coolness. I'm willing to bet there are other modifications done to the car for performance. The news story said he was speeding in his white BMW. Not sure which model that one was.
