I gave my notice Monday. Every jerk in my department called off yesterday AND today. So I'm doing the work of four people. I should have called off and gone for a ride. What're they gonna do? Fire me?

I would leave them a shitstorm of a gift when they return. My mantra for those two days would be half ass everything not pertaining to me!

Never burn a bridge behind you. You never know when you might have to cross it again.

Jaimec, ever work in insurance? It's the most life sucking job I've ever had. After two years, I'm done. You take money and don't help people. The only interaction is when you're being yelled at by a customer/shop or being scolded at by your supervisor because you're not chipper on the phone after being yelled at and scolded all day.

My boss and another are on vacation. My boss forwarded his phone to mine, so I get his calls and my own. The work from the other guy on vacation was split between on guy and myself in this group. So... that guy called in yesterday and today taking 'personal days' when he knew I'd be alone in the department.

This is bovine excrement.

Insurance work, huh? I wouldn't wanna do that gig....I would imagine the company doesn't wanna pay claims (my experience) and the customers want their claims paid....that puts you in the middle....bummer!

Go get yourself a pound of roast beef and a screwdriver. If you get a moment when no one is around, before or after work, whenever. Unscrew all the outlet plates in the office and put a slice or two in each outlet box and then screw all the plates back on. In a few weeks the place will start reeking real bad and they will have no idea where it's coming from. It will drive them nuts. Roast beef can smell awful. No bridge burnt and you get those jackholes back.

Or just do it to the outlets near the guys you dislike the most.
It will be months before they find out where the smell is coming from, if they ever find it at all.
Best part, you will have been gone for awhile so you won't even be considered a suspect.

I can honestly say I've never burned a bridge behind me.

I've blown a few of those suckers to smithereens though, with no regrets & a big self satisfied f-you smile.

Bollocks, if the Germans had done that in France we might be speaking German.

What did you do there?
I'm looking into being an insurance inspector and need some insight. I want to be that guy who goes out to a shop after some idiot drove there car through water and locked up the engine, then look it over with the tech and write down all that they say it needs and take it back to the office and do whatever they do.
Figured my experience working on cars might be good with that?????

everyone says don't burn that bridge! But, you know what, sometimes that bridge has to go! give 'em hell !!!!

Thumper
No one stands to have any lasting damage by how you leave except you. If you get in the habit of burning bridges behind you, you may start burning them before you even get there.
Then you are REALLY stuck in the middle.

I plan on putting in my time and leaving peacefully, but I'm REALLY frustrated by the lack of consideration from my co-workers. I get treated better by strangers. My headache was driving me nuts so I went for a ride after work and put in almost 100 miles on city streets in Columbus.

I posted a blog on my MySpace, I'll paste it here because this guy really made my day.

"I had a massive headache from work today. For the second day in a row, I was the only person in my department. I wasn’t too happy. I decided that it wasn’t too cold to take the bike out and see if I could find an industrial area to take some ‘moody‘ pictures of the bike. I found myself on North High St. waiting at one of the many cross walks as a cute, elderly couple ambled across the street. I didn’t have anywhere to go and no schedule to follow so I just sat there. The husband who could barely walk, stopped dead in his tracks and just smiled while watching my bike idle like a cold, rabid Chihuahua. His wife made it to the other side before she had realized that he was no longer holding onto her arm and turned around to retrieve him. She had to give a firm tug to move him as he was moored in the crosswalk. After a coupe steps he looked back, so I gave a wave and got a thumbs up in return.

All in all, I put a little over 100 miles on the bike tonight running around town. All of the pictures sucked, except a couple of them."

Rah, I would recommend avoiding the industry in general. However, a verifiable background in repairs or running a service department is generally needed. What company would you be working for? I'd rather work for a large company like Progressive, Geico, etc than to be an independant Inspector who is just subcontracting. Trust me, your 'expert' opinion will put you in court more than you care to be. People that don't know anything about cars will sue you and they'll win. I was sued by an attorney who had a Contract with us in California. The vehicle service contract specifcally excluded modifications that 'increase the likelihood of a mechanical breakdown.' The vehicle was an 03 Cobra with the supercharger replaced with twin turbos, a solid axle conversion, 6 pt cage, coilover conversion with a tubular front cross member, exhaust (w/no cats), slicks/skinnies, etc. Essentually, it was a low 10 second player as the Inspector had taken a picture of the dial in on the windsheild and the rear vinyl window decal of the dyno graph of the car making near 700 horsepower. After six months of letters and court, we had won. I still have the pictures because it's a badass car. This happens on a regular basis.

If as an Inspector, I would get something in writing from who you're contracting for stating that they will represent you when it comes to a lawsuit. Never be dishonest, never state that that it was a certain component/cause. State that 'based on the condition and nature of the failure it is my professional opinion that...'. You're just there to give your opinion and let the adjuster who you're contracting for make his binding decision based on the information/pictures you provided.

Thump, thats good to know. I never thought of that court stuff!
I only want to work for the big companies, State Farm, Geico, Progressive, Liberty, etc....

So i take it that is what you did, was an inspector? Was it for a little company?
i really appreciate the advice and input. And also sorry you hated it so much. These things are good to know when looking into a new career!

Hopefully your next gig will be alot better!
P.S. nice pic!

Hostage negotiators should all be insurance adjusters. I was a claims adjuster, but I subcontracted on the side for inspecting mechanical breakdown claims. As an inspector for collision work, that would be cake compared to mechanical failures (ie, extended warranties). If I could get in with a major player, I would do that over anything else...

always move forward in all aspects of life. This cannot be accomplished by having a retreat route. Burn that bridge and don't look back. I always considered quitting a job burning a bridge. Once i'm so sick of a job i quit, i have never gone back.
good luck
