I need to make a small speaker system that is run off of batteries and will take imput from a mp3 player, with adjustable volume up to 90db with no distortion. The catch is that it needs to fit in a small case so i can take it coyote hunting. Any sugestions? Or can anyone tell me how to build such a device?

How long do the batteries have to last?

Look for PC speakers that use a wall-wart for the power supply.
Try to find one that uses an easy voltage like 12 or 6 and them make a battery pack using the chopped power cable from the wall-wart.
You can probably get away with a workable solution for less than $35

I have a small speaker(case) that my ipod plugs right into. It has a cable for other input as well. I think I paid $59 for it but I have seen some smaller ones for less.

It zips up and is easy to carry.

Yes PC jack inputs are standard.

Beats me how tough they are as they're designed to be used in a cushy office.

You wouldn't get electrocuted by them if you're running them on a battery pack at least : )

Looking at my own speakers (old altec lansings)... looks like mine run off of 15V.

If you made a battery pack that had 10 D cells, I bet it would last a good long time.

I would wager that you could find a pair of speakers that run on 12V or lower so the battery cost wouldn't be as high.

There are quite a few companies that offer a 'boom box' of sorts that are set up for MP3 players. The one I have is pretty small and folds and zips closed. I couldn't fit it into my jeans pocket, but it fits into my purse easily. I doubt it weighs a whole pound.

this might be an option for you to make one.. this is the only thing i could find to show you what i mean...its a video.. Its a fold out chair that has 2 speakers in the arms that you can hook up an ipod to.. it runs on batteies.. just take the componets out of the chair and do what you need to do. The best part is they are like $15 at Walmart...

OK guys and gals I built what i needed and it worked like a charm! I got great sound and almost no money at all. I bought a cheap boom box and smashed it for components then rewired the volume control with a potentiometer i got from radio shack and ran it off of 4 d batteries . the whole thing fits into an old flashlight ( one of the big square ones) and really makes a racket. the coyotes could not resist. thanks for all your help!
