Doughnut, I'm confused. Check out the post above yours. Doesn't that link work?

Here are the poll results as of Jan. 6 about six PM. So far, 85 total votes. Quite a slowdown in voting since the 3rd. Be sure to vote at the link below even if you post your answer here.

in truth I do use it but never as a first option and usuely only in a hairy spot or I may drag it a little on a really long and steep grade so as not to overheat the front brake but we have so much brake surface I do not really have to worry much.

Well, the only time I use the rear brake( replaced the pads @ 50K with more than half material on them), is for settling the bike when diving in, and controlling wheelies...

Oh, and those times the front brake switch quits working...

So, I used never, since, back in TX, there is no fun corners to tear up....

But, I think its totally useless other wise, at least I think so...

Hey George,

Is there a reason to need to know how people use which brake?

If this were a governmental poll it would have to have a follow up poll, being "How did you find out which brake to use on a motorcycle?"

I hate to sound whiney here but like answering questions on the phone from strangers, I insist that I know where my data is going and just WHO and HOW it's being used.

As a result, I typically do not participate in surveys.

I'm a jerk in that way.

Slaughter, if you check my first post, you will see why I posted this poll. We don't know each other, at least yet, so I can't fix the "stranger" part except to ask you to look up my other posts and get a feel for who I am. The votes just come to me in the form you see them in my update posts. I have no access to who votes how and no interest. I consider the use of the data to be informative and, by some of the voters' posts, perhaps educational. Since we have only 91 votes so far, most members are in your non-voting camp. Not all of them can be jerks, I hope.

Vern, All will be revealed in my good time. Voting has slowed way down but votes keep coming in so I am waiting until voting has essentially stopped before I provide my concluding remarks even though I doubt the general distribution will change much.

Sorry if I mis-implied that others were jerks - I meant it as a bit of self-deprecating humor in calling MYSELF a jerk - sorta implying that many folks may not be responding for similar reasons. I'm kinda calling NON-Responders the jerks... sometimes the "tone of voice" comes out all wrong - my bad!

You really ought to post it on other sportbike boards to broaden the inputs. It truly is a very common topic and we'd all be well served by a larger sample population - possibly re-phrasing of the original questions? I can't answer the questions as-written... or I would have participated!

Hey Slaughter, I understood and was just trying to have some fun. I wasn't trying to slam you with my observation about the rest of the non-responding members being jerks. I guess my tone didn't come through very well. I tried with the Smiley.

About the "questions as written": I copied the poll from another forum to compare the response profile of the two groups. If I changed the questions, the comparison wouldn't be valid. My particular interest is in comparing two group with which I interact through the forums so I don't have an interest in expanding the populations at this time. Your suggestions are quite apropos were the survey to go to a broader population. I think Blake had to make do with a "best fit" response because none of them fit his use exactly as well.

Actually, I also understood your response at face value to some extent. I gave a response to a phone poll once and then they read back to me the opposite of how I had voted as my response, thanked me, and hung up. That experience sure didn't encourage me to participate again.

Gotchya!

Comparing polls is good.

There really wasn't a response that was purely situation-dependent.

Good idea though.

I suppose they are referring to riding on the road? I don't think I touched the rear brake at the track except in the parking/pit areas.

I actually got a steel line to make my brake work better, seems like if it's equip'ed with it, it might as well work properly.

We have gotten 100 BadWeb member votes so here is the comparison with the other poll that I have mentioned. The other poll (126 votes) is from Multistrada.net so primarily represents riders of one type of motorcycle which is comparable to the Uly. The Buell poll is open to riders of all models.

I find the results remarkably similar especially for the last three questions: 9 (Buell) and 11 (Multi) percent for "Always for stopping" and 57 (B) and 61 (M)for "Every time". The difference is probably within the error of the estimate. The "Only to hold bike/parking lot turns" were essentially the same at 24 (B) and 23 (M) percent. The large variation is found in the "Never" vote with BadWebers voting 10 percent compared with three percent for the Multi riders.

One point that was made a few times is that there may be a difference in rear brake use between track and street riding. I expect/hope/assume that most votes were cast from a street riding perspective. Also, others noted that they didn't fit in any of the four categories. Finally, yet others would pose the questions differently. All good and valid points just waiting for someone else to implement.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to vote and/or opine. The poll will be kept open for some time for others to get involved:

Now for my final revelation. On both the BadWeb and Multistrada boards, the "don't use rear brakes" folks were a stridently vociferous pack. Anyone who did use the rear brake was unskilled and/or a hazard to himself and others. You would have wondered how the rest of us managed to finish a ride without crashing because we used the back brake. It seemed crazy to me that everyone was using threshold braking every time they stopped or went into a turn. It turns out, everyone wasn't but those who did seemed to think that everyone should.

I had a hypothesis that this was a minority opinion and both polls showed this to be true. The reason I ran the BadWeb poll was to assess whether there was a different rider profile here than on the Multistrada board. I considered citing just the Multistrada results but that would have surely generated some guff about the different class of rider here (as in "better" "more aggressive" or some such stuff). I forget who talked about how he needed to know how the data were to be used if he was to participate in a poll. Now he knows. Again, I appreciate the time all of you took to participate in this research project.
