Press Release: for immediate publication
Date: 7/01/03
Subject: Ride To Work Day 2003

RIDERS REV UP TO LEAD THE 12TH ANNUAL RIDE-TO-WORK DAY.

This year's annual Ride to Work Day event takes place on Wednesday, July 16th. Motorcycle riding participants include tens of thousands of employees and workers at companies, government agencies and hundreds of motorcycle rider groups. Riding to work on this day demonstrates to the public and to all officials that motorcycling is more than a stimulating and invigorating recreation. For many people, riding is a socially responsible form of personal transportation that saves energy, reduces congestion, adds parking spaces, helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits.

Ride to Work Day dramatically shows that motorcyclists come from all walks of life, work in all occupations, and range in age from teenagers to grandparents. The American Motorcyclist Association and many other worldwide rider organizations have actively encouraged all motorcyclists to ride their cycles to work on the third Wednesday in July each year to show that motorcycling is a social good. Global participation in the yearly demonstration is estimated to be several million riders.

Today there are over two hundred and twenty million cars and light trucks crowding American roads and seven million registered motorcycles. If more motorcycles become a regular part of the transportation mix, it will help make urban parking easier and traffic will flow better, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. Studies have shown that urban motorcyclists reach their destinations faster and are more invigorated and refreshed upon arrival than those using automobiles. In advanced countries like Japan, Germany, and England the advantages of motorcycling for transportation are widely appreciated. In the United States, a smaller percentage of the seven million registered cycles are used for everyday transportation and commuting.

On the year's 12th annual Ride to Work Day, motorcyclists worldwide seek:
- Employer recognition and support for motorcycling
- Greater public and government awareness of the beneficial values of motorcycling

Bob,
If I can keep her glued together long enough, I'll be riding. Rockerbox leak this time

I ride to work pretty much every day between april and october, or as the bikes/weather permit.

Do you think it (the ride to work) makes a difference ?

Matt

Bob:
Coke is a big place although the employee to office ratio is not looking so good these days...
Everyone in the legal division that has a bike has promised me they'll ride tomorrow...
I guess I need to send in an updated version of my bike

Only about 15 bikes showed up this morning. I say only because I know there are more people here that ride. Probably has something to do with it being midweek. If they changed this to Friday, I think more of the folks that worry about corp. attire would ride in. I've seen more bikes here on any Friday (we work 1/2 days on Friday form Memorial day to Labor day) although this is more than you normally see midweek. The only bike I see today that I've never seen before is a purple Road King with gold flames, leather fringe all over, not my kind of bike but you can tell it's someone's pride and joy.

Just after I rolled in this morning another one of the engineers (there are a whopping three of us) rolled in on his Sporster 1200C. LOL...when he told me about Ride to Work Day yesterday, he started out with, "I know you ride to work everyday anyways, but..."

Well, my morning's commute through the South Bay was great today! Lots of motorcyclists on the freeway waving and returning waves. I even waved to a motor cop and he acknowledged back. At work the usual suspects were parked at the gate. The guards wouldn't let me post the RTW poster on the bulletin board there, so I put it on a piece of cardboard and bungied it on the S1's luggage rack for all to see. Where there's a will, there's a way!

Good day everyone,
Sparky

Hey, Roadthing,
Did you ride out today? I'm in Austin and there's a 70% chance of rain, but I haven't seen a drop yet today (uh-oh, I think I just doomed myself to swimming home!). Well, we ARE the Bad Weather Bikers, aren't we?

Jay: No, it was thundering when I left the house, plus I had to put on a jacket & tie for work today, so I took the car. In retrospect, it was a bad decision because the rain hasn't materialized and the meeting I got all dressed up for got cancelled.

In all honesty, I'm more of a FairWeatherBiker!

Ah, but the weekend forecast is good...

Hey,
okay rode to work (like the day before and the day before that.........)

We should start lobbying for a "ride to lunch, the long way" campaign. I think more people would enjoy that

I ride to work most days. I rode to work today. I'm the only one at my company who rides, so it was just another day. But I was out there.

I've been threatening to get some guys together for a ride in compitition with the company golf league . . .. . . . if they get to play golf on what amounts to a little bit of company time, we should be able to ride, yes?

I've been riding everyday (don't ask what? :) ) and the only "added" bike I saw parked in the lot today was a Gold Wing.

I did, however, intentionally get "lost" in Henrik's neighborhood and spent an extra 45 minutes "exploring" (yes, damnit I was lost trying to find a short cut) and had a ball!

Nasty storm blew through overnight but I fired up the Firebolt and hit the pavement at 6am today. All the riders at the office got together for lunch. This should be a monthly event.

I rode to work today. All 4 blocks from me house! No wait I took a 12 mile detour. I thought there was road construction?

My wife and I both rode to work today. She tries to ride to work at least two or three days a week. I will ride almost everyday.

Court: OK, I know you're dying for someone to ask, so I'll do it: What have you been riding everyday?

And have you confined your "exploring" to the roads, or are you still driving on sidewalks, too??
